Community Download is a weekly discussion-focused articles series published (usually) every Monday in which we pose a single, core question to you all, our readers, in the spirit of fostering discussion and debate. For today, we want to know if you would continue playing Beat Saber if it didn’t have any custom song support.
Facebook recently updated its Content Guidelines for Oculus Quest to include a new section titled “Oculus Platform Abuse Policy” that could affect certain types of sideloaded Quest content. Earlier today we wrote about what that could mean going forward, as well as included a comment from Facebook on the topic.
Specifically, the new guidelines seem to affect the BeatOn software that is often used to sideload content onto the Quest through SideQuest. The software allowed users to sync custom songs to a modified version of Beat Saber. The songs would sync according to the user’s bookmarks of an online song directory. This essentially automated the process of downloading pirated music and custom beat maps to the headset. A post to Reddit suggests the creators of BeatOn are withdrawing support after the new Content Guidelines update.
So now we’ve got Beat Saber on PC, which can fully mod songs and allows users to tweak and change the game however they’d like, Beat Saber on Quest, which will now require using SideQuest to manually alter the game rather than having a mod to automate it, potentially risking your own Oculus account in the process, and Beat Saber on PSVR with zero custom song support.
So the question at hand is this: Would you even continue playing or want to play Beat Saber without custom music? What if you could only play the official songs released by the developers? In the past we’ve spoken to the team about modding and the legal question marks it brings up.
