The leading provider in cinematic VR horror presents three new experiences sure to have you sweating through your headset.
I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again: VR is tailor-built for the horror genre. That feeling of being immersed coupled with pure isolation is perfectly suited for the sense of dread that comes from horror.
Dark Corner is well aware of this. The studio is responsible for some for some of the scariest cinematic VR experiences in circulation, from the paralyzing Catatonic, to the murderous, clown-ridden Night Night.
Now one year later and the studio is back yet again with a new trio of creepy VR nightmares that may have you screaming “nope!” sooner than you think.
Deerbrook
Described as a “slow-burn suspense-thriller,” Deerbrook follows two strangers, played by Zoie Palmer (Lost Girl, Devil) and Ari Millen (Orphan Black), as they arrive at an isolated cottage where they each claim to have their summers there as children. As the story progresses, things begin to take a much darker turn as the girls discover their urge to return may have been driven by something other than nostalgia.
Written by Grayson Moore and Aidan Shipley (Cardinals) and featuring performances by Palmer, Millen, Christine Horne (The Captive) and Nicholas Campbell (Black Mirror, Naked Lunch), the bone-chilling thriller held its world premiere at AFI Fest 2017 and was produced by Cameron MacLaren in association with Combo Bravo’s Jon Riera and Connor Illsley.
Mule (Updated re-release)
I had the chance to try out the original Mule myself at a Dark Corner event at VRWorld last year and it was, well, intense. Maybe it was the incredibly graphic 360-degree visuals that surrounded me. Maybe it was the fact I was sitting in an actual coffin that vibrated at key moments. All I can remember about the experience was how glad I was when it was over.
That’s why it was a bummer to discover the intense graphic nature of the terrifying 360-degree experience had been preventing it from being seen by a wider audience. Thankfully the projects director, Guy Shelmerdine, was able to work a bit of movie magic and re-edit the experience into a more widely acceptable version of the film that still, what he claims, “preserves 90% of the fucked up stuff you loved from the original.”
Premiered at Fantastic Fest 2016 and screened at Venice, Sitges, AFI Fest, Overlook, Cinequest, Beyond Fest, BiFan, and many other events, the psychological thriller puts you in the shoes of a seemingly normal man at the last moments of his life.
Of course, like many of the other experiences from Dark Corner, not everything is as it seems. The unsettling visuals and 360-degree effects were developed by the multi-award winning team at The Mill in Los Angeles and featured music scored by Dražen Bošnjak with Q Department and Mach 1TM proprietary spatial sound software.
Spacewalker
It’s not always about the blood and guts. Sometimes isolation can be the scariest scenario of all. A visually jaw-dropping 5-minute thriller, Spacewalker retells the incredible true story of cosmonaut Alexey Leonov, famous for becoming the first human ever to conduct a tethered solo spacewalk. However, space buffs can tell you how this historic moment almost ended in tragedy.
Produced by the legendary Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Hardcore Henry), Spacewalker was developed in partnership with the blockbuster Russian film of the same name using effects from CGF VR.
All three of these blood-pumping VR experiences will be available March 28th via the Dark Corner app available on major VR platforms.
