Personalizing your virtual space

Even your personal space in VR deserves a little flair.

Depending on your VR headset of choice, you may have the option to customize and decorate what things look like from inside the headset. You can do this with Oculus Rooms for Rift, customize your Dashboard with Vive, and make some adjustments to your Cliff House with Windows Mixed Reality. On our sixth day of 12 Days of VR, we've laid out the different ways to personalize your virtual space!

HTC Vive

You can customize the dashboard of your HTC Vive to make it more your own. Here are the basic steps to make your device feel more like home.

  1. Open SteamVR and ensure your HTC is calibrated correctly
  2. Press the Home button and navigate to the Settings icon
  3. Navigate to Customize > Background

Once at the customizing background section you can download custom backgrounds.

  1. Click Browse Workshop from the background customization menu
  2. Click Subscribe on a Workshop listing to initiate the download

You can quickly switch between customized backgrounds as well.

  1. Open the background customization area
  2. Browse through backgrounds thumbnails and click on the one you'd like

Windows Mixed Reality

When you load Windows Mixed Reality you're placed into a split-level Cliff House. You can customize this area to make it your own in a variety of ways.

First up, you can move and replace apps inside the Cliff House. You can place apps on shelves or other areas and organize them in a way that makes your work flow more efficient.

The next thing you can do is decorate your house with Holograms. There are two different styles of Holograms, the fun section, which include things like a mime that acts things out, and the Cliff House section that lets you completely redecorate the house including switching furniture, lighting, and wall hangings. The Holograms app is your best friend when it comes to redecorating your Cliff House in Windows Mixed Reality.

Oculus Rooms

Oculus Rooms is a virtual environment that makes it easy to play with your friends within virtual reality. The home environment for Oculus rooms can be tweaked in a variety of ways including hanging your own photos, changing the layout of the room, and even tweaking the time of the day.

You do all of this from the Customize your room section of Oculus Rooms.

You can also play music within the room from Facebook's collection of content and jump into VR with your friends from your customized room. Each section is clearly labeled and doesn't require many steps but if you'd like to see photos you can check out the guide linked below.
