Codename ‘Del Mar’ makes yet another appearance just ahead of Oculus Connect 7.
Those scrolling through the official Oculus app may notice a small addition to the list of headsets supported by the app. Previously, users could select from the Oculus Rift / Rift S, Oculus Go, and Oculus Quest.
Visiting the app earlier today, I noticed the addition of “Del Mar” next to the usual Oculus Quest selection. Seeing as how the Oculus Rift includes its updated counterpart, the Rift S, besides it on the list, one can only assume this new listing is in reference to the rumored Oculus Quest 2 or Oculus Quest “Lite.”
We first learned of a potential follow-up this past May in a report by Bloomberg. Since then we’ve been treated to several supposed leaks of the updated standalone headset, revealing an off-white streamlined design that does away with the physical IPD slider and fabric design in favor of a simplified Oculus Go-style build. There have also been whispers of a new “Jedi” controller powered via hand-tracking technology.
While it’s too early to say for sure, the appearance of “Del Mar” on the Oculus app could be in preparation for an upcoming launch. With Oculus Connect 7 just around the corner, many are anticipating big news from Facebook in regards to its lineup of VR hardware as well as Facebook Horizon, the companies highly-anticipated social VR platform.
Last week Facebook announced plans for mandatory Facebook integration on future Oculus devices, angering much of the community in the process. No doubt the company will be looking to buy back some goodwill at their annual developer conference; and what better way than with the surprise launch of a new-and-improved standalone headset?
