ILMxLAB’s next Star Wars VR experience arrives this fall at select Disney parks. New trailer here.

This past May we learned that Disney’s insanely-popular Star Wars-inspired theme park, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, would be receiving its own original VR adventure set at a previously-unexplored portion of the Star Wars galaxy known as Black Spire Outpost. Today, we received a brand new trailer for the upcoming sci-fi adventure, as well as some additional details regarding its story and cast.

Launching this fall, Star Wars Tales From the Galaxy’s Edge takes place on the planet of Batuu after the events of 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Players take on the role of a lowly repair technician who, after crash-landing on the outskirts of Black Spire Outpost as a result of a pirate attack, find themselves going toe-to-toe with the ruthless Guavian Death Gang and its leader Tara Rashin, played by Debra Wilson (Mad TV, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order). This is the same group who attacked Han, Chewie, and Finn in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

“We’re thrilled to get a chance to expand upon the story of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and bring Batuu home in a whole new way,” said Senior Producer Alyssa Finley in an official release. “Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge is being crafted from the ground up to harness the unique power of virtual reality storytelling. For Star Wars fans, there’s nothing like meeting new and iconic characters face to face, and embarking on exciting adventures through the wilds of Batuu.”

According to developer ILMxLAB, Tales From the Galaxy’s Edge will feature numerous activities to complete. In the cantina, players can listen to an Azumel bartender named Seezelslak, played by Bobby Moynihan (SNL, Star Wars Resistance), as he recalls a handful of legendary tales that will transport them to other times and places across the Star Wars timeline.

Players will also have the chance to craft their own story by completing a variety of missions scattered throughout Batuu. While exploring the wilds, players will come across a variety of familiar characters as well as a few new faces, including the terrifying Tara Rashin. Now that I think about it, maybe I’ll just stick to playing Repulsor Darts in the cantina…

Responding to a post made on Reddit, the team sheds some additional light on the upcoming experience, going so far as to make several comparisons to ILMxLAB’s previous Star Wars VR experience, Vader Immortal.

Star Wars Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge is a dream project for all of us at ILMxLAB. Bobby Moynihan and Debra Wilson are really bringing these characters to life with great passion,” said Jose Perez III, Director.

“Building off of the groundbreaking work for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, our team is working tirelessly to expand the story of Black Spire Outpost. We are excited for fans to have the opportunity to battle evil space pirates, explore Batuu, engage with iconic characters, or just hang out in Seezelslak’s cantina and play a relaxing game of Repulsor Darts.”

Star Wars Tales From the Galaxy’s Edge launches later this year on Oculus Quest. No word on pricing just yet.
