Pair your Garmin or Apple smartwatches for additional GPS functionality.

FORM’s AR-enhanced swim goggles received a free firmware update today introducing support for Garmin and Apple smartwatches, allowing wearers to track a wide range of metrics, such as their GPS location and heart rate, while swimming outdoors in open water.

FORM’s smart goggles feature an AI system capable of tracking the wearers performance and displaying key information on the lenses of the goggles via a hands-free AR overlay. Released back in 2019, the goggles were originally designed for use in the pool, giving wearers the ability to monitor their distance, split times, stroke rate, and stroke count in real-time without interrupting their session.

“We’ve always envisioned the FORM goggles to be used in both the pool and open water, so this launch really completes the experience we’ve been looking to provide to swimmers,” said FORM founder and CEO Dan Eisenhardt, in an official release. “We’re excited to be able to launch this at the peak of summer as more swimmers take advantage of their local lakes and beaches. Now, for the first time ever, swimmers can view their performance metrics throughout their entire open water swim.”

Today’s update enables owners to connect their Garmin smartwatches or Apple Watches and harness the power GPS to track a new range of metrics perfect for those swimming outdoors in open water. This includes distance, pace, heart rate, elapsed time, and more; all of which displayed directly on the lenses of the goggles.

“The introduction of the FORM goggles has been a game-changer for swimmers, and now with GPS and heart rate tracking available in open water, the goggles will fundamentally change the way we train outdoors,” added professional triathlete and Ironman Champion Lionel Sanders.

“Through the new open water features, swimmers are able to see the metrics that matter most, whether understanding their pacing in real-time, utilizing heart rate data to gauge effort and track efficiency and see distance so you can add structure while swimming in lakes and the ocean. This is a huge leap forward for the sport of open water swimming.”

FORM’s open water tracking features are available now to all owners via a free firmware update. Compatible smartwatches include the Garmin Forerunner® 945, fēnix® 6 Pro, and fēnix 5 Plus, as well as Apple Watch Series 5, 4, and 3. Those without a compatible smartwatch can still access open water metrics such as their elapsed time, stroke rate, and more via the brand new “goggles only” open water features.

FORM’s AR smart goggles are available now for $199 at formswim.com and on Amazon in the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Australia and Japan. You can download the free companion app via the Apple App Store and Google Play.
