PlayStation VR is one of the most mainstream VR systems currently on the market. Before the Quest came along, PSVR was one of the easiest ways for people to get into VR without a gaming PC. That being said, even with the addition of the Quest, PSVR is still a great option, especially if you already own a PlayStation 4 and you’re looking for a fairly cheap way to try out some VR games and apps.

Here’s our gift guide for someone starting out, or diving further, into the PSVR ecosystem.

Hardware

PlayStation Console

playstation consoleFirst things first – if you want to buy a PSVR headset or bundle, you’re going to need a PlayStation 4. There are two base options – the PS4 Slim (1TB) and the PS4 Pro (1TB).

The Slim is available for $269 and the Pro is available for $299. There used to be a 500GB model of the Slim model, making the price difference between Pro and Slim more substantial. However, the 500GB has now been discontinued, making the price difference between a Pro and a Slim almost negligible. With a PS4 Pro, you’ll get upgraded graphics and improved performance in PSVR games. So if you don’t mind spending an extra $30, that’s what we would recommend.

However, another caveat to keep in mind is that the PlayStation 5 is just around the corner, coming in Holiday 2020. The PS5 will be compatible with the existing PSVR systems, so carefully  consider whether you want to invest in a PS4 so late in its life cycle.

PSVR Mega Pack with 5 Games

If you already have a PlayStation and you’re looking to get started with PSVR then this Black Friday deal at Target is probably your best option. You get a PSVR headset, the PlayStation camera and a good selection of 5 games – Skyrim VR, Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, Everybody’s Golf VR, Resident Evil 7 Biohazard and PlayStation VR Worlds.

This bundle is available at Target for just $199, down from $299. However, it’s important to note that this bundle does not include PlayStation Move controllers. While you don’t technically need the Move controllers for any of the bundled games, the experience will be much better with them. There are also other PSVR games, not included in the bundle, that do require Move controllers, so they might be a good separate investment.

PlayStation Move Controllers

As per the above, most PSVR bundles don’t come with Move controllers included and yet some, but not all, PSVR games do require the Move controllers to play, such as Beat Saber. However, even those that don’t require the Move controllers in VR are often better experiences when you make the switch over from the DualShock 4. A pair of Move controllers is a worthy investment.

PlayStation Move controllers are available for $91.

Games

Don’t know where to start with PSVR games? Well, the good news is that the system has a great selection of games and some excellent exclusives, like Astro Bot Rescue Mission. You can check out our list of the 25 best PSVR games here.

Accessories

Mantis Detachable Lightweight Headset for PSVR

The PSVR headset doesn’t ship with any audio solution straight out of the box. That means that without headphones, all the audio for the VR content will still come out of your TV. However, this pair of lightweight headphones that clip onto the sides of the headset are a great solution to this problem. You can read our review of the headphones here.

The Mantis Detachable Lightweight Headset for PSVR is available to $41.14.

3dRudder Foot-Powered Motion Control for PSVR

We first reviewed the 3dRudder back in 2017, and we wrote up some impressions on this new PSVR-compatible version from CES earlier this year. You can find a list of PSVR games that support the 3dRudder on their website.

The 3dRudder is available for $119.

Skywin PSVR Charging Display Stand

If you’ve got a PS4, a PSVR headset, some Move controllers, a few DualShocks and maybe even some headphones, then this stand is the one for you. It will keep all your PS4 and PSVR-related devices and peripherals in one place, while charging them as well. It also has fans, which can be turned on to help keep the console itself cool. If you’ve got any other devices, they can also be plugged in to charge at the front via USB as well.

The Skywin PSVR Charging Display Stand is available for $39.99.

Beboncool PS4 Controller Charger

If you don’t want to full kit and caboodle that comes in the stand above, but just want to keep your controllers charged, then this handy little device will do just that with your DualShock 4 controllers.

The Beboncool PS4 Controller Charger is available for $11.39

PlayStation Camera Extension Cable

The included PlayStation Camera cable works well if you just want to play it on top of, or near, your TV. However, if you want to place your PlayStation camera anywhere else, you might want this extension cord for the camera.

The PlayStation Camera Extension Cable is available for $34.99.

PlayStation Plus: 12 Month Membership

ps+

PlayStation Plus will allow you to play online, meaning that certain PSVR games like Firewall Zero Hour will require a PlayStation Plus subscription. Even some free social VR games, such as Rec Room, will still require a PS+ subscription as they use PlayStation’s online services. You also get a selection of free games each month with PlayStation Plus – most of the time, these are standard non-VR PlayStation games. However, occasionally these do include a PSVR game, which is a nice bonus.

At the moment, a 12 month subscription to PlayStation Plus is available for $45, down from $60.
