Community Download is a weekly discussion-focused articles series published (usually) every Monday in which we pose a single, core question to you all, our readers, in the spirit of fostering discussion and debate. For today, we want to know if you think Minecraft Earth could become as popular or more popular than Pokemon Go?
Today is the beginning of the open beta for Minecraft Earth — although it’s limited strictly to New Zealand and Iceland at the moment. Regardless, this could be the start of something big for the AR gaming world.
Minecraft is one of the biggest and most recognizable gaming properties on the planet with millions of monthly active users, spin-off games, novels, toys, and more all coinciding the the smash-hit success of Minecraft as a brand. In many ways, those things parallel with Pokemon.
The big difference though is that Minecraft is specifically founded around the idea of creation and collaboration. At its core, Minecraft is a franchise about building things and playing with friends so, naturally, those pillars of design lend themselves very well to a mobile AR format. Everyone has a smartphone and with GPS satellites and real-world map data, it’s possible to use Minecraft Earth as a lens to view, edit, and augment the real world in real-time with other players. At least, that’s the ultimate vision here.
If all those pieces fall into place correctly, Minecraft Earth could be a huge success. So that’s the question for this week: Do you think Minecraft Earth will be the next Pokemon Go? Why or why not? Do you want to play?
