Community Download is a weekly discussion-focused articles series published every Monday in which we pose a single, core question to you all, our readers, in the spirit of fostering discussion and debate.
We are nearing the three year mark since the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive each originally launched. There have been hundreds of VR games, apps, experiences, and works of art released in that time, some of them groundbreaking and wonderful, but plenty of them not so much. There is just an immense amount of content out there now.
But we still aren’t quite at the level of VR immersion romanticized in decades of pop culture and science fiction. The likes of Ready Player One-level haptics and ubiquity are still a good ways away and we aren’t anywhere near the seamless sensory overload the likes of which Sword Art Online depicts, or even .hack//SIGN (pictured above).
So, while developers and hardware manufacturers toil away at trying to make the next great thing: What do you want? What is your dream VR game? Imagine for a second that technology was no limitation, funding was infinite, and any game you can imagine could be created — what would it be like? What about a game for current headsets — what would that be like using those limitations?
I’m a relatively simple person in that I truly want a game like Skyrim VR, but made from the ground up for VR headsets, but as an original EverQuest-style MMORPG with hardcore elements and a strict focus on realism mixed with medieval fantasy. I could just live inside that type of digital world.
