We’ve long wondered when Sony’s PlayStation Plus service, which offers free games to subscribers every month, would start offering full PlayStation VR (PSVR) titles. Now we have our answer.
RIGS: Mechanised Combat League will be free for subscribers in September. This is the first time a full game exclusive to PSVR has been offered on the service, and it’s available in addition to the two traditional games being introduced next month (Infamous: Second Son and Child of Light). It’s not clear how long RIGS will be available for free nor if Sony intends to add new VR games every month from here on out, but best snap it up as fast as possible if you haven’t already.
So long as you remain a Plus subscriber ($59.99 a year) you’ll be able to keep hold of your digital copy of the game.
This is an interesting choice of free offering for PSVR. RIGS is a multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS) in which players pilot mechs in futuristic sports arenas across the globe. It’s played using the DualShock 4 gamepad. We were big fans of it when it launched alongside PSVR back in October last year, though as with many VR games we’ve seen reports of players struggling to find games thanks to empty servers. Could this offer help to repopulate the servers?
Furthermore, Guerrilla Cambridge, the game’s developer, was shuttered by Sony just a few months after launch. Sony confirmed to UploadVR at the time that RIGS wouldn’t receive any more DLC, having launched one add-on just weeks before.
It could well be that Sony is testing the popularity of PSVR titles with this month’s offering, so if you want to see more of them on offer than it might be an idea to send positive signs.
