This is not an April Fools joke. I repeat: this is not an April Fools joke!
Thanks to a leak made by Valve themselves earlier today, we may have just received our first good luck at the companies upcoming VR headset.
In a now-deleted Steam page which appears to have been a placeholder for the upcoming VR headset, we get a solid look at the body and dimensions of what could very well be Valve’s long-awaited PC VR headset. According to the listing, the Valve Index will begin shipping June 15th and will come packaged with controllers and base stations. Whether or not the peripherals mentioned are Knuckles controllers remains to be seen, although another recent leak featuring a SteamVR headset symbol similar to that of the Valve Index does indicate the addition of Knuckles controllers.
Shown briefly in a now-edited developer video from Zulubo Production, eagle-eyed viewers identified what is clearly the SteamVR icons for the Knuckles controllers located directly next to an icon with a shape nearly identical to that of the Valve Index. This video also accidentally teases other possible headset specifications, including a potential refresh rate of 90 Hz and a 2016×2240 per eye render resolution.
Based on the images provided, the headset will come with integrated headphones, a tether with DisplayPort 1.2 and USB 3.0 connections, a power adapter, regionalized power adapter plug(s), both a narrow and wide face gasket, and a cleaning cloth. As far as system requirements go, users will need to meet the following minimum standards:
- OS: Windows 10
- Processor: Dual Core with Hyper-Threading
- Memory: 8G RAM
- Graphics: NVIDIA 970, AMD RX480
- Network: Broadband Internet Connection
- Added Notes: Additional USB 3.0 Port required for Headset Passthrough Camera & USB Port Support.
We expect to hear more information regarding the Valve Index this May. Hopefully, we’ll see confirmation of Knuckles controller support and Lighthouse 2.0 tracking.
