Relive the early days of gaming in this multidimensional experience that blends classic video games with modern VR technology.
It takes a lot of guts to design and release a full VR game centered entirely around retro gaming. After all, what could classic video games possibly have to offer when it comes to the futuristic technology of virtual reality? According to Arvore Immersive Experiences latest VR experience, quite a bit as it turns out.
Available now for the PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, Pixel Ripped 1989 is an epic retro adventure centered around classic 8-bit video games of the late 80’s, early 90’s.
Our journey Dot, a heroic in-game avatar tasked with saving her crumbling digital world from the evil Cyblin Lord, The dastardly antagonist has set fire to Dot’s home, and has now broken through to the real world in an attempt to conquer reality as well. By stepping into the shoes of Nicola, a second-grade gaming prodigy, users will have to complete a series of increasingly-difficult 2D levels on their trusted Gear Kid portable gaming device.
These retrogaming challenges are the least of your worries, however, as several real-world enemies patrol the environment in hopes of thwarting your high score run. Whether it be a cantankerous old school teacher dedicated to a fun-free classroom, or a seriously aggravated headmaster, players will need to keep their head on a swivel lest their device get confiscated.
Thankfully, Pixel Ripped 1989’s environment is littered with tools designed to help you distract attention from your world-saving game session. One level, for instance, gave me access to a powerful spitball cannon which I could use to knock over various in-game objects scattered throughout. By loading up my paper wad and taking aim using my head, I was able to knock over books, turn on the radio, even shatter windows in order to keep my grumpy instructor from verbally berating me.
At the conclusion of each level your 2D experience will then come to life, invading the real-world with unchecked levels of 8-bit chaos. It’s then up to you to coral the digital infection and save your fellow classmates.
Apart from its unique blend of retro and modern VR gaming, Pixel Ripped 1989 is bursting with tiny details and minute additions that come together to form an experience bursting with personality. Whether it be the classic CRT televisions, the old elementary school desks, or the one kid in the back of the class hiding a dirty magazine, an old school reference can be found within every inch of this thoughtfully-crafted VR experience.
My one piece of advice would be to play with a standard controller if at all possible. While I found utilizing the motion controls of the HTC Vive an overall comfortable experience, there’s no doubt a conventional video game controller pairs perfectly with this title. Especially when you consider the entirety of the game
