We still don’t know if we’ll be able to suit up as Tony Stark’s Iron Man in Marvel Powers United later this year, but this concept art for a prototype game starring the armored Avenger has us hoping we will.
Famed game developer David Jaffe, best known for his work with Sony creating the Twisted Metal and God of War games, revealed this week that his now-closed studio, The Bartlet Jones Supernatural Detective Agency, was prototyping an Iron Man game for PlayStation VR (PSVR). As Jaffe explained in a tweet, the prototypes were completely unfunded and were not associated with Marvel, but the studio hoped to pitch the concept to the company at some point in the future.
FYI: We had a PSVR IRON MAN game we were prototyping at Bartlet Jones! It was unfunded and @MarvelGames knew NOTHING about it (we were gonna pitch it to them later and HOPE they liked it!:). You could talk to JARVIS using PSVR mic while flying around;was so cool! Maybe one day!:) pic.twitter.com/0QSYkyAogh

Based on the concept art Jaffe showcased, though, the game was promising. You’d fly around in the Iron Man armor from a first-person perspective using two Move controllers to mimic your hands and first repulsor blasts (something I think we’ve all envisioned doing). The PS4’s voice recognition system could also be used to issue commands to Stark’s bleeding-edge AI, Jarvis. Perhaps the coolest feature, though is the option for ‘Marvel Team-Up’ style co-op play, with a second player on a standard display controlling either Nick Fury, War Machine or Captain America.
Sadly, Bartlet Jones recently closed its doors following a lukewarm reception to its first game, Drawn to Death, and the cancellation of another project. As Jaffe says, it might happen one day, but for now we’re left to dream about what could have been.
Still, there is a chance that Iron Man will be confirmed for the upcoming Marvel Powers United for the Oculus Rift, which brings a bunch of heroes together to fight off waves of bad guys.
