Black Friday may be a distant memory, but there are still some great savings to be had on VR headsets, at least in the UK.
Amazon has slashed £100 off of the HP Windows Mixed Reality headset. That means it now goes for just £299.99 for the headset and a pair of motion controllers – the cheapest we’ve yet seen for a major PC-based VR device on these shores.
HP’s headset is pretty standard when stacked up to the rest of the Windows line. It’s got a 1440 x 1440 resolution per eye and 90Hz refresh rate (though you’ll need a PC powerful enough to run games at this framerate, otherwise they’ll run at 60FPS). The design is very similar to Sony’s PlayStation VR (PSVR), with a ring resting on the user’s head at the top that hangs the visor in front of your eyes.
And, of course, the hit sports Microsoft’s six degrees of freedom (6DOF) inside-out tracking, meaning you’ll get comprehensive positional tracking in VR without the need for external sensors as with the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. It’s not the best Windows-based headset out there; that honor belongs to Samsung’s Odyssey, but that device sadly isn’t being sold in the UK and Europe.
