Lenovo & Pico’s Standalone ‘VR S3’ Headset for Enterprise to Launch in Q3 2020

https://ift.tt/2Mlg520

Lenovo today announced its next standalone headset, the Lenovo Mirage VR S3, is set to release sometime in Q3 in select countries. Built in conjunction with Pico Interactive, the headset is targeting education and enterprise customers.

Update (June 1st, 2020): Originally thought to be called the Lenovo VR Classroom 2, the company today announced that its next standalone headset, Lenovo Mirage VR S3, is set to ship to enterprise customers sometime in Q3 of this year.

Starting at “under $450,” the 3DOF standalone will be first available in North America, China, Japan, the UK, France, and Spain. The original article, now including name correction, follows below:

Original Article (January 21, 2020): With the so-called Lenovo VR Classroom 2 Lenovo Mirage VR S3, the company is offering up a complete package to educators, which includes hardware, content, device management, training, and support—all of it intended for middle and high school students.

The company says in its education-focused site that the headset will help teachers and administrators “easily integrate virtual reality lessons and field trips into their curriculum, leading to inspiration and meaningful learning outcomes.”

As for the hardware itself, Lenovo seems to be going a bit retro in the tracking department, as both the headset and single controller are 3DOF, which not only will keep students sitting at their desks due to the lack of room-scale tracking, but will also likely lower the overall cost of the hardware.

Lenovo says it will include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 running an Android-based OS, 1,920 × 2,160 per lens resolution display clocked at 75Hz, and an integrated 4,200 mAh battery charged via USB type-C. The field of view is said to be 110-degrees, which is more or less standard at this point; overall it basically sounds like a slightly beefier Oculus Go.

According to a press release, Lenovo VR Classroom 2 Lenovo Mirage VR S3 will launch sometime in Spring 2020.

Deflated Daydream ambitions notwithstanding, the Chinese tech giant is garnering itself a name in VR/AR product design and manufacturing. It recently partnered with Facebook to create Oculus Rift S, the inside-out tracked hardware refresh of the company’s PC VR headset, unveiled a new prototype AR headset for business travelers, and partnered with Finnish headset creator Varjo to certify a line of Lenovo workstations for Varjo’s super high-resolution commercial VR headsets.

New HP Reverb G2 Details: Thinner Cable, Half Resolution Mode, More

https://ift.tt/2U01A7V

New HP Reverb G2 details have emerged following the headset’s reveal last week.

Members of the HP team answered questions on Reddit following the reveal of the device, which is the result of a collaboration between HP, Microsoft and Valve. We already know the Reverb G2 is 4K PC VR headset with inside-out tracking afforded by four cameras. It’s also got Valve Index-style audio, redesigned motion controllers and improved ergonomics with a six-meter cable.

New HP Reverb G2 Details Revealed

HP Reverb 2 Frontfacing

Over on Reddit, HP confirmed that not only is the cable longer than the previous generation, but it’s “single barrel and thinner” too. As we already knew, you’ll be able to detach it from the headset, but HP also confirmed that it plans to sell replacement cables. No word on when they’ll go on sale or how much they’ll cost just yet.

As for the headset itself, the company revealed that it’s planning 60Hz mode and half-resolution modes. These should help the headset run on PCs that struggle with its beefy specs. There will also be camera passthrough, which will be in black and white.

Moving on to the controllers, HP confirmed that they won’t have capacitive sensors like Oculus Touch controllers. That means no finger sensing in this iteration. The grip button is now analog, though. HP already confirmed that it will sell the controllers separately and that they’re backward compatible with older Windows Mixed Reality devices, but clarified they won’t see pre-orders and will likely ship after the G2 itself releases in Fall 2020.

Do these new HP Reverb G2 details sway you on the headset at all? Pre-orders are open in the US now and will be launching around the globe soon.

QuestZDoom Receives Update, Includes Isabelle From Animal Crossing

https://ift.tt/eA8V8J

QuestZDoom released last month and gives Oculus Quest users a way to play classic Doom games and mods in full 6DoF VR. Now, a new update is available for QuestZDoom, which adds some minor features and bug fixes, while also bringing a new companion to the game — Isabelle from Animal Crossing.

Yes, really.

Announced on Reddit, the update is mostly minor changes including compatibility for more mods that require a later version of GZDoom (the engine on which the mod runs) and a change to player movement that makes it more consistent with other VR games. You can read the full patch notes here.

While not strictly part of the update itself, the announcement also came with a bonus surprise — the launcher will soon have a new option to install a mod that adds an ‘Isabelle companion’. The mod, initially available for flatscreen Doom, adds Isabelle from Animal Crossing as a 2D companion in-game.

While it’s unlikely anyone would complain about Isabelle joining you in Doom for no reason, the mod is actually referencing a series of jokes from earlier in the year. Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Doom Eternal both released on March 20, which led to people joking about Doomguy and Isabelle becoming best friends. Even the official game accounts got in on it, and then there was this amazing fan-made video that sees them team up to kill some demons.

Now, with the Isabelle companion mod, we’re all a little bit closer to living out that video in VR. You can watch some footage of the mod running on 2D Doom here — QuestZDoom will be updated to include VR support for the mod in the near future.

If you want to know how to install and play QuestZDoom on your Oculus Quest, check out our guide here.

Contractors Adds Mod Support, Beta Crossplay With Oculus Quest Version

https://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Contractors, a VR first-person shooter available for PC VR and on Oculus Quest in beta, received an update that adds mod support and the ability to host matches that allow for crossplay between PC VR and Quest players.

The game is a team-based competitive multiplayer shooter that launched in early access on Steam for PC VR back in December 2019, but has since moved to a full release. This latest update, v0.62, adds official mod support, which allow players to play custom maps made by community modders. Custom maps were already available to download online before the update, but official support integrates the process into the game itself. Players can now seamlessly pick custom maps or loadouts from within VR and host their own lobbies to play that content with others.

However, that’s not all. Contractors has also added the ability to jump in this update, along with three new games modes — Bomb Defusal, Death Match and Gun Game FFA. There are also new weapons, improved animations, a tutorial for new players and changes to the UI. All-in-all, it’s a massive update.

Additionally, PC VR Contractors players can now host a ‘Crossplay Beta’ game, allowing them to play matches with Oculus Quest players. The Oculus Quest version of Contractors is still in beta and not officially available just yet. However, if you want to try it out, you can download the APK from the Contractors Discord server. For instructions on how to install the APK, check out our guide on sideloading.

Contractors is available for PC VR on Steam, and you can read the full Contractors patch notes here. If you’re getting started with the game, check out our beginner’s guide from last year.

Prey VR Listed, Then Removed For PSVR

https://ift.tt/36T9oxE

A UK retailer has listed, then promptly removed Prey VR for PSVR on its website.

Twitter news account Nibel originally reported the listing, which we saw with our own eyes and screencapped below. It’s since been taken down, though it only contained a placeholder packshot. We reached out to Prey publisher Bethesda earlier today but the company hadn’t replied by the time of publication. It wouldn’t be the first time a new Bethesda game has leaked via a retailer, though.

Prey VR Listing

If there’s any validity to the listing — which a quick search on Wayback Machine confirms was created today — it doesn’t necessarily mean a full port of Arkane Studios’ 2017 revival is on the way. Prey actually already got some small VR support in the form of a bonus escape room-style mode and, later on, support for headsets in its Typhoon Hunter multiplayer mode. They were fun, if insignificant little additions to the main game.

We’d most likely expect this to be a repackaging of the game with its VR modes clearly marked out, then.

Then again, it’s possible that these modes stemmed from the team’s own work getting the full game to work in VR. Prey is an expansive first-person role-playing game that would definitely work well inside headsets. It’s mix Bioshock-style combat and atmosphere is perfectly suited. Whatsmore, Arkane was also behind last year’s Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot, so the team is certainly experienced with the tech. If there is any truth to it, we’d expect to see it on PC VR devices, too.

All the same, we wouldn’t get too excited until we hear something official. Would you play Prey VR? Let us know in the comments below!

VR Physics Puzzler ‘Gadgeteer’ to Get Biggest Update Since Launch Soon

https://ift.tt/2O0YujD

Gadgeteer, the physics-based VR puzzler inspired by the whimsical machines of Rube Goldberg, is slated to get the biggest update since its launch into Earl Access last year.

The update is said to include a number of new devices such as a new color toolhead with 60+ colors to choose from, and two new gadgets, the Start and End Cube, which lets you remotely start and stop your contraptions.

The update will be available starting June 11th on all supported platforms including Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift, Valve Index, HTC Vive, and Windows VR headsets. Another update, slated for release in August, is said to let users upload and share puzzles in an online sharing feature.

Road to VR contributor Gabriel Moss got a chance to play Gadgeteer in our Early Access review, saying it’s both “a fantastic Rube Goldberg-style reaction machine builder and, at its most gripping moments, a true example of VR Presence—where the act of building and testing a machine becomes so engaging that you forget you’re playing with code instead of physical toy dominos.”

Developing studio Metanaut also released a new trailer highlighting a machine that wasn’t possible to build before, making use of tracks, rails, and catapults to create one of the hottest non-sport sports to come to 2020: marble racing.

Doom VR Mod Brings Animal Crossing’s Isabelle To Oculus Quest

https://ift.tt/2XlmMHw

Upgrade your demon-killing adventures with this cuddly murder companion.

This past March marked the launch of both Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Doom: Eternal, too wildly different games supported by two equally different player bases. Thanks to a shared release date, however, the communities have since banded together to form one of the most adorable fan art trends in recent memory.

Now you’ll soon have the chance to slay demons side-by-side with the adorable Resident Services representative as part of a new update for DrBeef’s QuestZDoom for the Oculus Quest. Available now via SideQuest, QuestZDoom is an engine port capable of running classic Doom titles in 6DoF VR with support for Touch controllers, so long as you legally own a copy of the game. Using the QuestZDoom launcher you can then install a variety of modifications, environments, and texture packs to enhance your experience.

Yesterday’s update also paves the way for future essential mods, including an upcoming AI companion based off Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ Isabelle. In a video posted to Reddit, the humanoid Shih Tzu can be seen ripping and tearing demons alongside the player, using both the iconic double-barrel shotgun as well as her own canine teeth. Though it’s not shown in the clip provided, the uploader of the video, VR_Bummser, claims that Isabelle will begin to cry when the player is killed and drown will her sorrows with a bottle. She will also toss the player ammo throughout each mission, similar to Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite.

A full list of today’s updates can be found below:

  • Updated to LZDoom 3.85 – This brings compatibility with many mods that require GZDoom 4.3 or later. Please note that many mods still have incompatible shader code as are as Android is concerned, so if a mod runs on your windows machine on LZDoom 3.85, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll run on QuestZDoom
  • Fixed issue where multi-projectile weapons (like the shotgun) fired all the shot in a single flat line, which was quite frankly just weird and I’m surprised no-one commented on it!
  • Changed player movement to have no acceleration/momentum.. this is consistent with most VR games (including all the other DrBeef ports), this can be reverted back to the old functionality in the VR Options menu
  • Ability to bind a key to “cinema mode” (big screen mode, some mods might require it)
  • Prevent crosshair from ever being drawn (makes no sense)

In order to get started, you’ll need to sideload both QuestZDoom and the QuestZDoom Launcher to the Oculus Quest via SideQuest. You’ll then need to copy the WAD files from your official Doom purchases to the newly-created Doom folder on your Quest headset. Official installation instructions can be found here.

According to VR_Bummser, the Isabelle companion mod will soon be added to the launcher for auto install.
