Gather round! We’ve got the very first look at gameplay from upcoming VR adventure, Journey For Elysium.
This story-driven experience is coming from Belgium-based Mantis Games. In the experience, you’ll find yourself in a take on the underworld based on Greek mythology. You’ll go in search of redemption, crossing the perilous waters of the river Styx by boat. You’ll be solving puzzles along the way. Oh and, yes, you’re dead. That’s just a small detail.
The trailer showcases the game’s black and white art style, which certainly sets a tone. You’ll travel across epic scenery, physically rowing with a paddle to cross the Styx. At certain points you’ll jump back on land to tackle trials that involve you shooting arrows and more. Completing puzzles earns you keys that you’ll then use to progress to the next area. It’s like Zelda VR on a boat… in hell. Cheery!
Mantis says the puzzles are designed to channel 90’s-era adventure games. We definitely get a Myst-like vibe from the trailer, so we guess they’re heading in the right direction.
Journey For Elysium is due for release on Oculus Rift and HTC Vive in Q4 of this year. It’s set to release on Steam so hopefully native Index support will be included too. No word yet on ports to other headsets like Quest and PSVR. The game’s also going to be on display on the show floor at Gamescom next month. The game’s already listed on Steam right here. You can also find more video footage include developer diaries at the link.
