5 VR Games Released in March Worth Checking Out
This month’s immersive offerings include squad-based combat, post-apocalyptic archery and a parkour puppy.
Now that there’s finally a healthy ecosystem of VR headsets competing for the affection of users, we’re thankfully at the point where we’re regularly being treated to a constant flow of both polished and unpolished VR experiences. Afterall, the only thing more important than the hardware itself is the content to experience.
That being said, let’s take a look at five of the more prominent VR releases for March:
Apex Construct (HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Windows Mixed Reality)
Available on all major headsets for $29.99, Apex Construct is a fully-developed solo experience that thrusts users into a post apocalyptic future controlled by ferocious synthetic beasts. The last human in a world destroyed by mankind’s reckless experiments, you must uncover the truth about your species’ near-extinction using only your bow and cunning to survive.
Along with a captivating plotline, Apex Construct boasts a wide array of features from a flexible weapons system and multiple hidden pathways and puzzles, to a fully customizable homebase.
Apex Construct is available now for all major headsets via SteamVR.
Ark Park (HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, PSVR, Windows Mixed Reality)
Although it was met with mixed reviews, Ark Park is still the closest you’re going to get to a full-fledged Jurassic Park VR experience. A standalone expansion of the popular Steam title Ark: Survival Evolved, this VR rendition brings that same dino-breeding action in the form of 10 unique locations bursting with over a hundred prehistoric creatures.
However, your enjoyment of this experience fully depends on your understanding that this is NOT a full VR recreation of the original Ark: Survival Evolved. Ark Park is more of a tight concentration of the original games most appealing features repurposed for headsets and motion controllers. You’ll still be collecting DNA, trading engrams at your base, discovering and hatching your own companions and defending vital technology from moraogin hordes of wild dinosaurs with your fellow adventurers.
Unfortunately no free locomotion, teleportation only.
Ark Park is available now starting at $39.99 on SteamVR and $55.63 on PSVR.
Bravo Team (PSVR)
Cinematic action comes to the PSVR in the form of Bravo Team, an intense single player/online 2 player coop experience chock full of explosions, fire and of course plenty of bullets. Best used with the Playstation aim controller, players must peak around corners, hunt enemies with their guns sight and even blindfire over cover to secure the battlefield. Multiple pathways mean multiple outcomes, highlighting the importance of split second decision-making and constant communication.
Impressions have been mixed, but if you’re looking for an intense arcade shooter to enjoy with a buddy, this may be the casual VR shooter you’ve been looking for.
Bravo Team is available now for $39.99 via the PSVR.
Golem (PSVR)
Arguably the most unique VR experience on the list, Golem not only takes VR in a new direction, but storytelling as a whole. Playing the role of an injured young man sequestered to your bed, you eventually develop the ability to create and puppet mysterious stone beings known as “golems.”
Seeing through their eyes, the boy is able to first explore the entirety of his room using several toy-sized golems. However, as is ability develops the boy is eventually able to conjure enormous 15-foot golems capable of navigating the abandoned city outside the safety of his room. There you’re stone puppets will navigate the ancient world, encountering various dangers along the way.
On top of this unique gameplay, Golem features original music from the award-winning composer Marty O’Donnell of Halo and Destiny fame, as well as lean-based “incline VR controls” by Jaime Griesemer, game designer on Halo, Destiny and Infamous Second Son.
Golem is available now for PSVR.
VR Soccer Training (Windows, Oculus Rift)
Ok, so while it may not be a AAA VR title per say, it’s hard to ignore an experience with controls as unique as VR Soccer Trainer. Available now for PC and the Oculus Rift, this bizarre soccer “simulator” does away with motion controls in favor of full-body interaction. However, whereas most VR experiences with full-body integration would most likely use a tool such as the Vive tracker, VR Soccer Trainer instead employs the use of the long-forgotten Microsoft Kinect.
Using the motion capture technology featured in the abandoned device, users can use their entire bodies to perform free kicks, shoot targets and even block shots on goal. Is it a fully-fleshed out title? No. Is it an interesting use of “obsolete” technology once thought dead? You bet.
So if you happen to have an old Kinect stuffed away somewhere, why not dig it out for a couple rounds of indoor training? After all, it’s free.

The Biggest Rift, Vive And Windows Releases Of The Week 03/25/18
This is a bit of a slow week for PC VR. If you have a Vive then the biggest release of the week is something you’ve probably been playing for months now, but it’s a big one for Rift owners. A VR space shooter is of note as well, making its Steam debut finally. The other games are solid, but not super noteworthy.
If you missed last week’s releases they’re here. And don’t forget that UploadVR has a Steam community group, complete with a curated list of recommendations so that you don’t have to waste any money finding out what’s good in the world of VR. We also have a top list of the absolute best Oculus Rift and HTC Vive games at the corresponding links.
LA Noire: The VR Case Files, from Rockstar Games
Price: $29.99 (Rift release, Vive version released last year)
LA Noire VR was our Vive Game of the Year in 2017, so it’s a big deal that it’s already making its way over to the Rift officially on Oculus Home. You take on the role of Cole Phelps, a detective in 1940s Los Angeles, CA and have free reign to drive around and explore the entire city.
Here’s our full review of the Vive version, but it does seem like the Rift release is having some bugs.
End Space, from Orange Bridge Studios
Price: $19.99 (Currently Discounted)
End Space is the VR space shooter for everyone. I say that not only because it’s an accessible and fun game, but also because if you own a VR headset of any kind then you can probably play it. After hitting Gear VR it’s since released on PSVR, Rift, and now Vive and Windows VR via Steam. It’s not overly complex, but if you miss the days of straight up singleplayer space shooters, then grab this one for sure.
Read our full review here.
NeverBound, from Enthusiast Games
Price: $19.99
NeverBound is an Early Access release, but it has some real potential. It’s a gravity-defying shooter with high-flying combat and some really challenging puzzles sprinkled throughout. Future update plans include co-op, non-VR support, and PvP. This is definitely one to watch.

The Biggest PSVR Releases Of The Week 03/25/18
This week doesn’t have a ton of new releases, but that’s okay. You know why? Because perhaps the very best VR racing game thus far just got released and it’s an exclusive. Every PSVR owner needs to experience this one.
If you missed last week’s releases, you can see those here. UploadVR also launched the ‘UploadVR PSVR Community’ on PlayStation 4! Join up, find other gamers to play with, and engage in discussions with them. Also, don’t forget to check out our list of the 9 Best PlayStation VR Games if you need any extra inspiration.
WipEout Omega Collection VR, from Sony Interactive Entertainment
Price: $39.99 (VR Support is a free update)
I shouldn’t have to sell you on this. It’s WipEout, the legendary sci-fi racing series from Sony, but in VR. Since it’s the WipEout Omega Collection has a ton of tracks, lots of ships, and plenty of content. Online multiplayer. Cross-play between VR and non-VR. If you have a PSVR then you should be playing this game.
Read our full review for more.
Preta: Vendetta Rising, from Illion Corp.
Price: $19.99
Preta: Vendetta Rising is a third-person VR “MMO” in which you control fantasy characters and lead them against an army of bad guys. VR support doesn’t add much to this type of game, but it’s at least a unique experience for PSVR. It’s a port of a PC VR title from last year.
Khalid Young Dumb & Broke VR, from Sony Music Entertainment
Price: Free
This VR experience puts viewers in the center of an immersive representation of one of Khalid’s iconic tracks. Through it all you’ll explore “cityscapes, the far reaches of the cosmos and high school football fields” like never before. It’s free, but only recommended for existing fans.

‘Beat Saber’ Reveals New Track Ahead of Details on April Launch
After getting our hands on VR rhythm lightsaber game Beat Saber at GDC 2018 last week, we’ve been looking forward to more information on the game’s release date which is so far set to fall in April. Now developer Hyperbolic Magnetism has revealed a new song, which will launch with the game, and plans to announce the precise release date next week.
Beat Saber will launch on Steam in Early Access in April, but exactly which day is still (painfully) unknown. Today the game’s composer, Jaroslav Beck, today revealed another one of the game’s 10 confirmed launch tracks, titled Legend:
Developer Jan “Split” Ilavsky said today on Twitter that the new song is “hopefully the last song released before the game release,” and that a release date announcement for Beat Saber will come next week.

Apple ARKit Apps Surpass 13 Million Downloads In Six Months
Here’s a list of the most popular free and paid Apple ARKit apps.
During Apple’s WWDC event, Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering introduced ARKit, boldly declaring that “Apple will have the largest AR platform in the world.” ARKit, which is a toolkit that allows developers to build their own AR apps for iPhones and iPads launched with iOS 11 in September.
Now a new report reveals that in just six months after its release, more than 13 million ARKit apps have been downloaded on iPhones and iPads around the globe.
According to data firm Sensor Tower, the data gathered primarily focused on apps that were ARKit-only apps, and not an app that was ARKit compatible or was updated with ARKit. This likely explains why you won’t see, apps like the Amazon app with its AR View, or Pokémon GO as part of the data.
The data collected broke down AR apps into three categories, ARKit-only Apps, ARKit-only Games, and ARKit-only Non-Game Apps. Within each category, apps were then listed in order of top 10 as either Top Free, Top Paid, or Top Grossing.
So what were the top ARKit apps over the past six months (Sept. 19, 2017 to March 19, 2018)?
AR Dragon (a virtual pet simulator) is listed as the top free ARKit app worldwide across all categories (gaming and non-gaming), and CamToPlan Pro (a measuring tool) was ranked as the top paid app overall.
ARKit Apps
Other apps that established themselves as standouts early on, such as IKEA Place, GIPHY World, The Machines, and My Very Hungry Caterpillar AR, continue to be among the most-downloaded since last fall.
ARKit Games
Data also showed that gaming, lifestyle and entertainment apps have all increased in downloads compared to a similar report back in October, with gaming not only having the biggest jump compared to the last report, but also made up for almost half of the 13 million downloads — a whopping 47 percent.
Utility apps were the second most downloaded category making up for 14 percent of the downloads, and Entertainment apps making up for the third most downloaded apps at 12 percent.
What is most surprising is that even with all of the discussion about how augmented reality will play a big role in K12, higher ed, and corporate learning — the data showed educational AR apps dropping from 7 percent in October of 2017, down to 4 percent in the most recent report.
Perhaps this recent data was one of the motivators behind Apple’s recent “Let’s Take a Field Trip” education event, which highlighted Apple’s commitment to focus on the education market, specifically through augmented reality.
In an interview with VRScout, Jaime Donally, founder of ARVRinEDU and author of Learning Transported, talked about education apps and how she’s not that concerned about Sensor Tower’s recent data report, “I’m impressed with the amount of ARKit apps for education to be honest because edu typically takes a long time to catch up with other industries.” Donally said that “many developers have created products that can be utilized in education – but have only seen their apps categorized as entertainment.”
Donally is right, case in point, many of the ARKit apps from any of the categories outside of Education could easily be gamified and used in an educational setting.
Randy Nelson, head of mobile insights for Sensor Tower, said in a blog post, “From what we’ve seen in our latest analysis, ARKit-only apps continue to grow in terms of installs and the number of experiences available to users.”
Apple’s ambition with ARKit is huge, and according to this latest report, the last six months have been pretty good for the tech giant. 13 million downloads is nothing to scoff at.

In League Is A Multiplayer VR Shooter Inspired By The Last Of Us
Ever since Onward burst onto the VR shooter scene we’ve seen an influx of modern-themed shooters that do their best to replicate what it must be like to fire a gun at other humans in a war setting. Games like Rainbox Six, Ghost Recon, and SOCOM are often cited as heavy inspirations. Pavlov is perhaps the best other VR example with dozens of others popping up on Steam all the while and the likes of Firewall: Zero Hour coming soon to PSVR.
In League, an upcoming VR shooter by Ryan Schattner, takes a bit of a different inspiration. The Last of Us is most well-known for its gripping, emotional singleplayer narrative, but it also features an inventive multiplayer mode. Teams face off against one another as they scavenge for gear and supplies and must deplete the other side’s shared pool of respawn lives. It’s not wholly original, but the setting, premise, and game mechanics create an especially frantic and tense atmosphere.
Rather than once again emulating classic military shooters, In League aims to replicate that sense of post-apocalyptic survivor mentality in a VR shooter. The game already sports a wealth of “husk” character models, various guns, and several attachments.
In the demonstration video above, Schattner explains you can enter and explore all of the buildings in the city as he walks around exploring. At one point, you can see him jogging in place to make his character sprint as well.
We still don’t know a whole lot about In League, but it’s at least looking to do something a bit different in the VR shooter space. Let us know what you think down in the comments below!

Chinese Funeral Parlor Gives Death Tours in VR
Visitors could virtually participate in a death experience.
The largest funeral home in Beijing China, Babaoshan, opened up their doors to the public last week for a day of tours, showing off everything that’s included when you have to say your last goodbyes. Built in 1958, the funeral home gave on-site visitors a look at the funeral hall, the farewell hall, the guard room, the body cosmetic room, the shower room, and the cremation room.
Aside from highlighting all the facility’s features, the funeral home decided to go a step further this year—letting you experience the entire process of dying in virtual reality.
In an attempt to dispel the mystery surrounding funeral services, Babaoshan funeral home created two VR experiences, one of which lets you experience the story of having a seizure at work, a failed paramedic rescue, your heart stopping, and a final farewell to relatives from the afterlife.
The second VR experience lets you go on a five minute tour of the funeral home, taking you through corpse delivery, storage, mortuary preparations, the memorial service, and cremation — a tour that would take an hour in real life.
While experiencing the day when you finally kick the bucket is probably the more bizarre uses of VR we’ve seen in awhile, the funeral home believes the virtual tours help family members save time during a time when they would rather be mourning.
The funeral facility is no stranger to technology. Last year, Babaoshan launched a 3-D printing studio to assist with repairing the faces of those disfigured in death for open-casket funerals. The staff also developed a robot called Kino that helps disinfect every surface during mortuary preparations.
VR is no stranger to near-death experiences or even horror experiences that place you in an actual coffin. Last year we saw a Japanese AR app that let you see holograms of your deceased loved ones at their grave.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew’s IBM Watson Voice Control To Continue Through 2018
After hearing swirlings that the IBM Watson-powered voice recognition features for Star Trek: Bridge Crew would be deactivated, we reached out to Ubisoft for confirmation. As a result, it looks like that isn’t the case after all.
“Star Trek has always been about pushing technology forward, so in that spirit we are happy to be continuing our partnership with IBM Watson,” said David Votypka, Sr. Creative Director at Red Storm Entertainment, the Ubisoft studio that developed of Bridge Crew, in a prepared statement. “Watson is standing by to await players’ orders in Star Trek: Bridge Crew and will be usable in upcoming content that is currently in development.”
Ubisoft and IBM also explained that the support is planned to continue through 2018 for both existing and upcoming content.
“We are excited to continue IBM Watson voice recognition in Star Trek: Bridge Crew throughout 2018,” said Joel Horwitz, Vice President, Strategic Partnerships & Offerings, IBM Digital Business Group in a prepared statement. “We look forward to our ongoing partnership with Ubisoft and to keeping our communities apprised of updates.”
The IBM Watson voice functionality has never been an integral feature of the game for most players, but it is a crucial facet for those that prefer to play as a solo captain. If you’ve got a full squad of friends on the bridge then you can rely on them for support, but being able to issue orders vocally to the AI is a huge boon when playing alone. Using only menus is frankly a bit cumbersome in a complex game like this. While this news is far from definitive on the future of the program’s support, it at least ensures another eight or so months.
Another great example of voice recognition in VR is with PSVR-exclusive psychological thriller, The Inpatient, in which you speak to NPCs using your real voice. Ideally, this type of support will become commonplace in VR over time instead of an ancillary bullet point feature.
Have you tried the voice recognition features in Star Trek: Bridge Crew yet? Fore more on the game, read our full review. Let us know down in the comments below!

High Fidelity & NeoSensory Partner to Launch ‘exoskin’ Haptic Jacket, Coming July 2018
High Fidelity, the open source VR platform founded by Second Life creator Philp Rosedale, and NeoSensory, a Palo Alto-based haptics company, announced they’ve partnered to create a haptic jacket dubbed the ‘exoskin’.
A beta version of the device, which is available for pre-oder through NeoSensory for $400, features 32 sensory motors, and will support High Fidelity’s titular open source VR platform.
Developers can build haptic applications that control the exoskin with JavaScript in High Fidelity, allowing developers to add features such as sensing people at a distance, signaling directions or conveying tension as part of an in-world experience.
The target release date of exoskin is slated for July, 2018.
Venture Beat‘s Dean Takahashi went hands-on with exoskin while jacked into a High Fidelity nightclub using an Oculus Rift, saying that he and another journalist “spent some time touching each other, and I could feel the sensations of touch on my torso and back via the haptic sensors on the vest. It was a buzzing sort of feeling.”
Co-founded by neuroscientists Dr. David Eagleman and Dr. Scott Novich in 2013, NeoSensory offers several haptic products already, including a wrist-mounted haptic devices for the deaf, and a haptic vest dubbed simply ‘VEST’ (Versatile Extra-Sensory Transducer) which was featured in Season 2 of HBO’s Westworld.
While High Fidelity’s platform is technically hardware agnostic, CEO Philip Rosedale says that NeoSensory “solves the absence of touch in VR” thanks to the company’s “deep neuroscience research and experience with haptic response.”
High Fidelity is focusing on building the foundation of a truly scalable VR platform. Late last year the company integrated DigitalOcean’s cloud server technology which lets High Fidelity users create their own cloud-hosted ‘VR domain’. In addition to its own centrally-regulated cryptocurrency High Fidelity Coin (HFC), they’ve also created the beginnings of an online economy, replete with virtual shops and a digital registry tied to the blockchain that verifies ownership and the exchange of digital goods.
“We are very excited to extend our product leadership into making VR a better experience,” Rosedale said, speaking about NeoSensory’s exoskin.

5 Major Changes Between The Ready Player One Book And Movie
Other than pretty much every plot point and story beat, the book and movie for Ready Player One are mostly the same…sort of. That isn’t to say that one is inherently better than the other, but they do differ in such dramatic ways that it’s better to think of them as two separate adventures that reference the same source material and characters.
So, it should be needless to say at this point, but just in case you don’t get the point of this article there are a lot of spoilers for both the book and the movie versions of Ready Player One to follow. As in, the entirety of the rest of this article is specifically focused on discussing spoilers. If you want a spoiler-free review of the movie, you can read and watch that here.
Wade’s Life
From the opening moments of the Ready Player One film, things are very different. In the book, Wade lives in the stacks on the outskirts of Oklahoma City. The center of the VR universe is Columbus, Ohio, and he dreams of living there, near the serves for The Oasis, one day but it’s a far off fantasy. In the movie, the stacks are already in Columbus. Everything left of humanity feels like it exists within a few miles.
Furthermore, after IOI blows up his home, killing his only family that’s left in the real world, in the book Wade flees to Columbus using the vast funds he has amassed via endorsement deals from his newfound celebrity status inside The Oasis. In doing so he changes his name and gets a new identity to hide himself. In the film, he ends up getting abducted by one of Artemis’ henchmen and joins “The Resistance” with her after his real name is revealed. He never changes his name, never gets a swanky futuristic apartment, and never really alters much about his life other than buying a nice haptic suit with some spare cash.
That’s a pretty major change.
Meeting Art3mis
Speaking of, yeah, he meets Artemis in the movie very quickly. In fact, I’d wager about a third of the film takes place outside of The Oasis and includes scenes of the two of them talking on balconies, scheming at desks, and kissing in the backseat of vans. A huge plot point of the book was the fact that they never met until the very final pages, but they’re introduced physically very quickly in the movie.
Additionally, their entire relationship is very different. In the book, she is a pseudo-famous guide writer and streamer in The Oasis that everyone knows. A lot of that backstory existed prior to the film beginning, but it’s character development we miss out on.
Once they do start talking more in The Oasis and becoming friends, he falls in love and gets a little…creepy. Eventually she blocks him to focus on the egg hunt and he gets depressed, barrages her incessantly with messages and emails, and becomes a bit like a cyber stalker. Then they magically come back together and are in love once again. The movie mostly erases this entire subplot and collapses the timeline significantly.
The High Five’s Relationship
In the book, Wade hangs out with his best friend Aech in his virtual basement that includes all of their favorite games and movies. It’s a bit like an exclusive club that only top-performing players and close friends get access to. In the movie, this takes the form of a modder’s garage instead. This means that Wade, Artemis, Aech, Daito, and Sho never meet up to discuss things and never agree to remain friendly rivals.
In the book, they’re competition is a driving force. They don’t really share hints and clues much and typically prefer to stay as competitive as possible. In the film, they’re working together like a merry band of best friends as soon as they all meet in person.
Speaking of, in the book, Daito and Sho are not real-life brothers like they are in the movie. In fact, the two have never met each other and near the end, Daito is actually murdered in the real world by IOI. The movie’s ending is far less morbid and actually includes all five of them gaining control of The Oasis together as they live happily ever after.
The Order of Events
All of those other details are easy to gloss over and look past since the core of the characters remain the same in the rest of the film, but it’s hard to ignore just how dramatically different the content of the movie is from the content of the book. Literally every single challenge is completely different.
There is no epic King Kong plus T-Rex laden car chase racing sequence in the book. Instead of searching through the inner workings of The Shining, like in the movie, they must do the same with War Games and Monty Python and the Holy Grail in the book.
Many of the relatively obscure (for Western audiences) anime references are gone from the film as well, such as Ultraman, and replaced with more well-known IP like The Iron Giant. He makes a big impact in the final battle, as does a Gundam and (thankfully) Mecha Godzilla, but there are still a ton of differences.
In the book, Halliday is very specifically obsessed with the 80s, but in the movie nerd culture from the 70s all the way up through the 90s and 2000s is referenced liberally. An entire army of Halo spartans rushing into battle is definitely not a scene from the 80s and neither is Tracer from Overwatch.
And at the very end they decide that The Oasis will be closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays because people need to spend more time in the real world — completely ignoring that maybe lopping off ~28% of the world’s economy isn’t a great idea.
The Keys, Gates, and Challenges
In the book when a player finds one of the keys they must then find the gate that will give them a clue to the next key, for the next gate, and so on. Three keys, three gates. In the movie, the keys open gates immediately which present clues for the next pair of keys and gates. Essentially, this compresses the entire plot and cuts the events in half, give or take.
And at the very end of the book three different people are required to present one copy of each key to open the final gate for the final challenge, which only one person can complete. That idea is gone completely from the film.
This is far from an exhaustive list, but instead was intended to touch on the major plot points that changed. Let us know some of the big differences you notice down in the comments below!

Animal Force Is A Chinese PSVR Launch Title Finally Coming West
If you’ve ever signed up for an Asian PlayStation account to peruse some of the offerings that differ from the PlayStation Store in the west, you may have come across Animal Force, a bizarre tower-defense game. If not then don’t worry, because it’s coming to these lands very soon.
Developer ISVR this week announced that its cartoonish adventure will be coming exclusively to PlayStation VR (PSVR) very soon. In the game, you must save earth from an alien invasion by utilizing super powered animals. This means picking up cute little critters like pandas and rhinos and placing them in a 3D space with your PlayStation Move controller so that they can shoot down approaching enemies.
You can even grab your allies and swing them into enemies to take part in the action yourself. The trailer above shows what that looks like; it all seems a little manic, but the developer assures it requires a lot of skill and strategy.
On top of the standard campaign, there’s also a four player party mode with an assortment of minigames that look to offer Playroom VR-style fun. This one could offer a lot of laughs.

Lenovo And Google’s VR180 Camera Goes Up For Pre-Order
Lenovo and Google’s standalone Daydream headset, the Mirage Solo, has been available to pre-order for about a week now, and now you can grab the other half of the pair’s VR offerings, too.
The Mirage VR camera, which was introduced alongside the Solo at CES 2018, can now be pre-ordered for $299 on Amazon. The device is one of the first to carry Google’s new VR180 label. That means it can capture a full 180 degrees in stereoscopic 3D, though isn’t able to take 360 degree images and video. The tradeoff is the most affordable price compared to many 360 cameras and a much more traditional and accessible form factor that the pair no doubt hope will get more people shooting VR content.
Coming in around the size of a wallet and weighing just 139 grams, the Mirage Camera uses two wide angle, 13 megapixel sensors to capture content. It’s fully integrated with YouTube so you can quickly share content, with livestreaming capabilities also built in via a Wi-Fi connection. An upcoming VR180 app that connects to the camera will also allow you to preview content on your smartphone screen.
The kit comes with 16GB of internal storage though support up to 128GB micoSD cards.
Daydream integration means you’ll be able to view your content inside the View headset as well as the new Mirage Solo, which is expected to roll out in the US in May. Can Lenovo and Google bring VR to a mainstream audience with these new products?

10 Minutes of ‘Vacation Simulator’ Gameplay, Owlchemy Labs’ Sequel to ‘Job Simulator’
Owlchemy Labs, the studio behind Job Simulator (2016) and Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality (2017), are back again with a new whimsical take on the simulator-satire genre – Vacation Simulator.
Unveiled at this year’s GDC, we got a chance to go hands-on with the colorful, object-based game that puts you in an imperfect simulation of what life must have been like before all the jobs (and now vacations) were replaced by automated labor.
Taking what they’ve learned from their previous titles, Owlchemy Labs is setting Vacation Simulator apart from Job Simulator by offering multiple interlinked areas which can be traversed by node teleportation, letting you pop into sections of the game that offer room-scale activities like playing beach games, building sand castles and chomping down on popsicles you can buy with sand dollars (replete with a $ dollar sign). There’s also a narrative at play, although we’ve only seen one area in the demo, so what that’s supposed to be, we just can’t say.
Check out our hands-on with Vacation Simulator to hear all the fun you’ll be having in the virtual sun.
Vacation Simulator is slated to arrive on HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and PSVR sometime later this year.

There’s Something in the Air Is A WebVR Experience About Air Pollution
A new WebVR experience launched this month is teaching users about air pollution around the planet.
There’s Something in the Air is a VR data visualization experience created by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Brookline Interactive Group (BIG), The Public VR Lab, and Datavized Technologies. It uses VR to present viewers with a globe that they can spin to see different pollution statistics for different countries and a slider so they can cycle through data from 1990 – 2015.
As narration at the start of the experience suggests, the piece is best viewed in the HTC Vive, though also works well with smartphone-based devices (or even just your normal browser). Poles extend from each country’s landscape, their height and color indicating the amount of pollution they produced in the given year. Furter narration and explanations also accompany certain countries. It’s a pretty accessible means of getting a glimpse of how the world if coping with cutting down on pollution.
“This experience demonstrates how big data and VR can be used together to create an immersive environment for increased understanding and enhanced communication of real-world challenges,” Debra Anderson, co-founder of Datavized Technologies, said in a prepared statement. “We are delighted Datavized geospatial software products and mapping technologies are being used as powerful tools for environmental education, awareness and impact.”
