Meta's servers aren't working correctly, and the issue has rendered all Quest headsets temporarily unusable.
Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and the Quest platform have been inaccessible since around 7:30am PT. Trying to access them results in a login error.
Meta's Communications Director Andy Stone says the company is "aware" of the issue and "working on this now".
All of our Quest 3 and Quest 2 headsets, which were connected to Wi-Fi and on standby, show a 'Something went wrong' screen preventing the main system interface from appearing, meaning no apps can be launched. UploadVR has heard from dozens of other people experiencing the same issue.
Quest headsets don't require an always-online connection, and still continue to offer basic functionality such as playing singleplayer games, even on a network where Meta's servers are inaccessible. So what's going on here?
Given the fact that Facebook, Instagram, and Threads appear to have logged everyone out, it seems that either Meta's server has issued a signout command to all apps and devices or a client-side security check thinks the login token is no longer secure. Regardless of the cause, Quest headsets have signed their users out and returned to a setup mode, though this mode is unable to connect to Meta's servers.
This isn't the first time VR users have woken up to find their headset unusable due to a software issue. Back in 2018 every Oculus Rift stopped working due to an expired certificate. That problem took Meta (then Facebook) more than 12 hours to fix - many Quest owners will be hoping this issue is resolved much faster.
This story is breaking and may be updated with additional details as they become apparent.
