Pinterest joins the ranks of Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram with its new “Try On” mode.
Pinterest, the popular social media platform that lets its 320 million active users worldwide everything from pin meatball recipes to the latest make-up tricks, has launched a new feature called Try On that lets you literally “try on” the latest new fashion trends using AR.
At the moment, Pinterest’s Try On AR feature is only available as a way to explore different shades of lipstick from companies such as Estée Lauder, Sephora, bareMinerals, Neutrogena, NYX Professional Makeup, YSL Beauté, Lancôme, and Urban Decay from L’Oréal, but will soon open up the feature to other categories.
Pinterest sees AR as a great addition to the “Pinning” experience by giving you a way to explore new looks without the anxiety that can come from sitting with a makeup artist in a store or buying expensive new products that you’ve never tried online.
Maya Dean talked with VRScout on using AR as part of her personal Pinterest makeup experience saying, “I would absolutely use this feature. I’m sure many other teenage girls would love it too, especially if they’re just getting into makeup. “It could allow girls to be more confident with trying bolder looks if they had an idea of how they would look with it.”
To help you get the right lipstick suggestions, Try On uses one of Pinterest’s other features used to detect a user’s skin tone range. This feature uses your smartphone camera to narrow down skin tones from “dark skin,” “pale skin,”, and “olive skin,” through a dropdown menu of skin tone pallets. Once your smartphone has determined your skin tone, Try On will then use AR to apply different shades of lipstick over your lips. However, Try On won’t use skin smoothing algorithms that you would see in other AR face filters offered by Instagram or Snapchat.
The reason for this is Pinterest wants your AR experience to show the real you in real-life and not the “selfie-you” behind a bunch of filters. In a blog post, a Pinterest rep said, “We believe in celebrating you, and so our AR won’t be augmenting your reality, but rather helping you to make happy and real purchases for your life.”
As AR technology continues to become more popular, Pinterest sees an exciting and fun opportunity for its users to experience their social media platform in a brand new way. As their platform grew, so did how people searched the Pinterest database. Make-up searches jumped up to 217%, with lipstick shades leading those numbers. More importantly, traditional shades such as red and pink took a backseat to shades such as black which shot up to 139%, with blue lipstick increasing to 61%.
In the near future, the company will roll out its AR tool to other areas of its platform such as eyeshadow, foundation, and even clothing. I could even see Try On potentially stretching into areas like cooking with AR step-by-step instructions, or as a way to sell try on motorcycle helmets.
One way Dean would love to see the Try On feature used is with tattoos. “As exciting as it would be for something like lipstick and makeup, I would be more excited to try it with a tattoo or piercing since AR would be very helpful in letting me see how it looks on me. It would definitely be cool, and people would use it.”
You can use Pinterest’s new Try On feature today via a compatible iOS or Android device. Simply launch the Pinterest camera in search and then click on “Try On”. Expect updates for other Pinterest categories to roll out later in the year.
