How To Enable Controller-Free Hand Tracking On Oculus Quest

https://ift.tt/2LQBQXt

Oculus Quest now has experimental controller-free Hand Tracking. Here’s how to enable it.

Hand Tracking is part of the v12 update for Quest. It lets you use your hands naturally in VR rather than through Touch controllers. However, it currently only supports a handful of non-third party apps.

Annoyingly, Facebook “rolls out” its update over a period of around a week. You can check what version your headset is currently on by going to Settings -> All Settings -> About inside VR.

To make it more likely you’ll get the v12 update soon, make sure your Quest is connected to WiFi, connected to power, and in standby mode (ie. not turned off).

If you have Version 12, you can enable controller-free hand tracking by going to the ‘Experimental Features’ tab:

Quest Experimental Hand Tracking

If you do have the v12 update but don’t see Hand Tracking in Experimental Features, reboot your Quest. You can do this by holding down the power button (on the side) while inside VR and selecting ‘Restart’ from the menu.

You should now no longer see your Touch controllers. Set them down and you should see your real hands in VR, and the tutorial for Hand Tracking interactions on the Quest system menu. To sum it up, you “click” by touching your index finger to your thumb- “self haptic” interaction.

Since almost no apps currently support Hand Tracking, you’ll probably want to switch back to Touch controllers soon. To do that, simply go to Settings and click ‘Use controllers’. ou can re-enable Hand Tracking then by going back to Settings and clicking ‘Use Hands’.

The SDK for developers rolls out next week and the first third party apps will start to get Hand Tracking support in January, according to Facebook.

Have you tried hand-tracking? Which apps do you think would be best using the new feature?
