Microsoft Reveals Dell and Asus VR Headset Designs

Microsoft’s planned roll out of a whole suite of VR headsets continues with the revelation of designs from Dell and ASUS.

The Microsoft roll out is one of the most interesting plays for VR dominance given the headsets are extremely light weight and feature precise tracking that requires no outside hardware — so they are much more convenient to set up than a Rift and Vive. No extra USB ports or wall-mounting needed to use the Microsoft-powered headsets. Microsoft also plans to offer full motion controllers for your hands that will provide accurate tracking whenever they are in sight of the headset’s sensors.

While Microsoft said it would allow headsets featuring a wide range of specifications it is unclear what differences there are in the actual functionality of each of the ones coming out starting later this year. There appear to be some differences in the face cushions or how the headsets lock into place on your head, but more significant differences like frame rates, resolution, field of view, and display types are largely unknown. That said, all the Microsoft headsets we’ve heard about use LCD displays instead of OLED as used by the Rift and Vive. I reached out to Microsoft recently to find out why they picked LCD and the following prepared statement explains the reasoning:

Microsoft and its partners had certain requirements with regard to resolution, performance, weight and affordability, and the displays used in the Acer headset met all of those requirements. In addition, we’ve been impressed by recent advancements in LCD technology that specifically target scenarios for immersive headsets. The Acer headset uses a new technology called “impulse backlighting” that addresses the requirements for good mixed reality experiences.

For those interested in a deep dive into these technologies, I’d recommend checking out Michael Abrash’s blog from 2013. I asked Oculus CTO John Carmack whether impulse backlighting could make LCD displays more feasible for VR, and he replied: “Yes. Limited contrast and transition times can still be an issue.” That said, getting a full picture of how the Microsoft headsets will match up against the Rift and Vive is going to have to wait until more is known.

High Voltage Studios announced a major update for its Oculus exclusive collectible card game Dragon Front.

Update 2.0 is available for download today in the Oculus store. It will bring a new campaign mode, new champions for your favorite faction and new cards via booster packs. According to Dragon Front’s updated store page, the full list of game features now includes:

  • NEW! Single-Player Story Mode—Live the Conquest through the eyes of the seven factions!
  • Online Multiplayer – Head-tracking and VOIP brings players from all over the world head-to-head on the battlefield.
  • 7 Thematically Diverse Factions – Each army is equipped with unique powers, traits and strategies.
  • Collectible Cards – Construct your 30 card deck from over 460 battle-hardened soldiers, defensive fortifications that evolve the battlefield, and a wide array of spells.

The new campaign mode will offer not one, not two but six new challenges for you to play through. Your hard work will be rewarded with boosters that contain the updated new cards and champions.

In Dragon Front, a champion is a special, extremely powerful card that you have from the beginning of each match. Champions have a very high mana cost, however, and so usually can’t be brought out until the middle or end of a match. The abilities and power of these champions effect the meta of Dragon Front significantly and adding new ones will likely force high-level players to rethink their favorite strategies and deck builds.

Dragon Front is one of the few VR games right now that can be said to have a “hardcore” following of players. High Voltage has previously explained to UploadVR that their most committed players are logging in at least once a day and a very competitive scene has developed at this upper echelon of VR strategists.

Impressive Social VR Demo Combines Mouth and Eye Tracking

There are multiple initiatives across the VR industry attempting to provide the most immersive and involving social experience the platform can provide. Creators like Avi Shapiro of USC’s Institute for Creative Technologies are even working on ways to bring realistic avatars into VR content to enhance the immersion that much more. Shapiro’s project is technology that rapidly produces good avatars with accessible technology, but it has some work ahead when it comes to facial scans. Face and Communication Entertainment, or FACE, is a project from a Colopl company called 360ch that is building a social VR demo collaborating with BinaryVR, Facerig, and FOVE.

FACE is tackling avatars on three levels through technology from three companies to provide an expressive final product:

  • Facerig’s 3D model rendering technology provides the foundation for expressive avatars
  • The FOVE headset, which we covered recently during GDC, provides an eye-tracking solution
  • Binary VR‘s face tracking camera records your own expressions so that they can be transplanted onto the 3D avatars

Social interaction is crucial for the future of VR and efforts that improve the potential of the platform are pivotal. Headsets and touch controllers already add a degree of fluid movement that improves the immersion of virtual spaces, but a tool such as FACE is another step toward us interacting naturally with people that are thousands of miles away from us.

Even beyond social VR, FACE could be used to produce realistic performances for characters that will be added to other forms of VR entertainment. It can also be used to analyze expressions and give developers valuable data as players work their way through their creations.

OpenAI is directing robots on how to move using references created in virtual reality.

Another day, another exciting use for the versatile technology that is virtual reality. That’s what it feels like at least, considering nearly every day we’re waking up to fresh new possibilities and critical advances within the budding industry. We’ve seen augmented reality food menus, VR peripherals in the form of samurai swords & ping pong paddles, even an insane head-mounted display forcing you to aggressively poke your buddies in the face.

Now thanks to the creative minds over at OpenAI, VR has found yet another way to make its services useful: training robots to eventually conquer the Earth as our overlords, thus rendering all of humankind obsolete.

Okay so maybe I’m being just a little dramatic. OpenAI isn’t developing Skynet, but it’s still some relatively groundbreaking work in the field of robotics and simulation-based training that deserves some attention. Using their brand new algorithm, one-shot imitation learning, OpenAI has developed a new form of robotic communication that allows them to easily train a machine on certain functions & movements by demonstrating the desired action in virtual reality. However the coolest part has to be the fact that machines subjected to the simulations can perfectly replicate the actions after being shown them only once.

The Elon Musk-backed organization utilizes a system of dual neural networks that enable machines to learn by observing and decoding recorded actions. The ‘visual network’ takes an image from the robot’s camera and outputs a state indicating the positions of the objects. The second network, referred to as the ‘imitation network,’ observes a demonstration and interprets what is happening as well as how it is being done. By learning from thousands of demonstrations on various tasks the algorithm actually allows the machine to not only replicate scenarios, but adapt in order to accomplish goals in unpredictable circumstances as well. See?! Skynet!

“Nothing in our technique is specific to blocks,” says Josh Tobin, a researcher at OpenAI, in the video above. “This system is an early prototype, that will form the backbone of the general-purpose robotics systems we’re developing here at OpenAI.”

It appears as though the sky’s the limit for this open-ended VR system. While the actions and results of the robots may be small now, even simpler movements could eventually revolutionize the assembly lines of various industries and plants. Engineers and manufacturers could easily train massive amounts of robotic machinery capable of handling tedious aspects in the productions of mass-produced items such as vehicles or appliances. With the right demonstrations and the necessary advances in hardware, these intelligent machines even have the potential to handle more intricate and delicate functions which normally require a human touch.

While you certainly can jump into a random multiplayer and hope for the best, you can also hook up with your friends and have a real crew to set out with. All you really need is a compatible VR headset and these quick details on how to jump in with friends.

How to add friends

When it comes to playing with friends on different platforms, for once you've got some options. That's because thanks to Ubisoft Club you'll be able to play with your friends no matter which compatible VR headset they are playing on. This of course means that you can play on PlayStation VR with your best friend who is running an HTC Vive at their own house. Oculus Rift users can come chill too, there are no borders here.

To add friends you'll need an Ubisoft Club account, and from there you can add your friends by their username. You can also link up with your PlayStation friends and Steam friends, so that anybody you might want to play with is listed there. This is best done in the browser with your headset off, so when you're in VR you can focus on playing the game.

Once friends have accepted your request, you'll be able to find them easily when you want to play.

How to create a friends-only crew

While you certainly can play with random denizens of the internet, you're here because you want to play with your friends. If you want to create a crew only your friends can access, or ensure you don't get random passers by, then you'll want to create a private match.

When you choose a game mode at the beginning of play, you have four different options to choose from. If you want a friends-only crew then you'll want to select private match, which will ensure that only the folks that you invite in will be able to play with you during that session.

Private matches are limited to the people you, the room creator, invite. Friends can see you are online, but will not be able to join the room you create unless you specifically invite them. From inside a Private match, if you decide not enough of your friends are online, you can open the match to the public.

How to invite friends to an existing crew

There may come a time when one friend has to jump off from playing and another is going to replace them, or you may have a friend joining you later in the game. In any case, when the time comes that you want to add another player to your existing crew, all you need to do is open up the options menu.

You'll see a screen on the list with all of the friends that you are connected to. Just select the friend that you want to invite, and they'll be able to join you on the Command Bridge in just a few moments time as long as there's a space open on the Crew to join.

Mobile VR is taking yet more strides to becoming more social; Oculus and Samsung’s Gear VR mobile headset will soon be getting Chromecast support.

Integration arrives via the latest edition of the Oculus Android app and the wider Android OS. That means that users will be able to mirror the image they see inside the headset to a nearby flatscreen so that others can see what they’re playing, a little like what can already be seen with Rift, Vive, and the social screen feature on PlayStation VR (PSVR). Gear VR could already livestream gameplay to Facebook, but this is a much more convenient option for those in close proximity to players.

The feature comes at an interesting time; earlier this month Google announced that its own mobile VR ecosystem, Daydream, will also be getting casting support via an upcoming update.

We also recently found out that Samsung’s latest smartphone, the Galaxy S8, will be the first phone to support both Gear VR and Daydream when support for the latter launches in another upcoming update. Drifter Entertainment, a Seattle-based virtual reality game studio, has unveiled its first VR title, Gunheart, a multiplayer sci-fi shooter for the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive VR headsets.

The title is the first from a team that includes veterans from Microsoft Game Studios and Epic Games. I played a three-player co-op session of Gunheart, and it left me sweaty and spent from all of the shooting. It shows that VR games are getting more intense and console-like, in terms of how the experience is evolving for the second year of the high-end VR platforms.

Gunheart has been designed to take full advantage of motion controls and 3D spaces within VR. It runs on Epic’s Unreal Engine 4, and it will be coming to Oculus Rift and HTC Vive this summer and PlayStation VR later in the year.

Ray Davis, cofounder of Drifter Entertainment, said in an interview with GamesBeat that Gunheart combines the fun of summer sci-fi blockbuster movies with the polished genre-defining gameplay of Gears of War and Halo. Players are futuristic bounty hunters, linking their minds and hearts with robotic killing machines across the galaxy.

The game handles movement using the familiar teleport system, which helps to get rid of the nausea associated with movement in VR. Players teleport quickly through levels, engaging alien enemies with a variety of weapons, which can be held in either hand. You can teleport to vertical spaces, gaining an advantage on the aliens below.

I quickly came to favor teleporting to high spaces so that I could get an advantage on the aliens we were shooting. But the aliens adapt quickly, as it would be too easy if you could simply teleport and land right behind an alien every time.

“It’s a challenge because it is hard to follow your co-op friends when you can teleport all over the map,” Davis said.

The aliens were bug-like creatures armed with their own weapons. Once in a while, they cornered me and brought me down. My colleagues had to revive me. While I got shot once in a while, I was able to get the most kills out of the group in my first session with the game. That means it was easy to play the game.

The game has level that can take a while to get through. It’s not simply an experience where you play for 15 minutes and then you’re done, Davis said. There’s a loose campaign narrative to tell you why you’re fighting. There are a lot of weapons, ranging from crossbows to assault rifles. The crossbow was easier to shoot, but it reloaded more slowly. I reloaded the gun by pointing the gun downward and then flipping it upward in a physical gesture.

If you put your hands together, you can transform your guns into a single, rapid-fire gatling gun. We talked to each other on voice chat, telling each other where we were and what our objectives were.

Gunheart has 12 people. The founders include Davis, Kenneth Scott, and Brian Murphy. Davis recently served as general manager for the Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4. He was also a chief technology officer at Microsoft on the HoloLens project, and he was the lead programmer on Gears of War and Gears of War 2.

Scott spent 15 years as an art director in Triple-A games at places such as id Software and Microsoft Game Studios. He worked on titles such as Quake 3, Doom 3, Rage, and Halo; most recently, he worked in VR with a team of veteran developers at Oculus.

“After working on the Bullet Train demo, I am doubly excited to work on immersive VR games,” said Davis. “We see a real marriage of active play and VR.”

Murphy spent the last decade as a designer and creative director at Microsoft. Murphy helped take several major platforms and games from incubation all the way to ship, including Xbox One, Microsoft HoloLens, and the Xbox Kinect. Most recently, he helped create the virtual travel experience Holo Tour for HoloLens.

“It’s been nonstop, hiring people and building the game as fast as we can,” Davis said. “We didn’t want to go super dark. We wanted to make something beautiful. There’s something magical about VR, where you are transported to another world.”

Naturally, the convergence of all that game developer talent and powerful VR technology has led to a lot of amazing experiences but in some cases it still feels like we’re struggling to really gain our balance.

Familiar isn’t necessarily bad though as some of the best games ever made are more iterative than innovative after all. GunHeart, the cooperative multiplayer shooter debut from new VR game studio Drifter Entertainment doesn’t seem to be breaking any new ground, but is looking to add enough polish onto an already proven concept to keep gamers coming back to their Rifts and Vives for months on end.

I got the chance to try out an early build of the game and play a bit of multiplayer with members from the team. The lobby area that loaded up felt appropriately ripped right out of the cantina scenes from the Star Wars films and made me feel immediately at home.

There was a circular bar in the middle with different attractions spread around, such as a corner that let me join games, as well as a small gallery of enemy models to inspect. Getting up close made me uncomfortable because of how detailed and grotesque they were. Drifter has even built social tools such as voxel painting in the air and the ability to make balloons shoot from a handheld device to add a bit of levity to the game’s otherwise grim tone.

When we booted into the match I had two items in my hand. One was your standard sci-fi pistol while the other was a revive tool. Reaching behind my back with the left hand allowed me to switch weapons, swapping the revive tool for a handheld crossbow, but this was no ordinary crossbow. After firing this weapon I was able to curve the arrow through the air and control its trajectory which is perfect for hitting enemies behind cover.

As it stands the only form of locomotion in the game is a point and click teleportation system. I can either beam myself to a spot immediately or use the analog stick to aim the direction I’d face, just like the default controls in games like Robo Recall and Arizona Sunshine. I’d have liked the option of full locomotion, but that doesn’t seem to be on the agenda at this time.

Ray Davis, co-founder of Drifter, told me they are embracing teleportation as a “superpower” for characters in the game so it’s ingrained as a key part of the experience at this time. It works great as intended, but after playing games like Farpoint, which feature similar cooperative multiplayer elements, I felt restricted not being able to maneuver around the battlefield without pointing to teleport somewhere.

Luckily the combat itself feels fantastic. Each of the weapons I tried have satisfying feedback and feel unique. As a special weapon I can even hold both guns out in front of me and let them meld together to create a massive bow in my hands. Pulling back the string and firing an arrow this way felt incredibly powerful.

I only got to play a single mission in my demo, it was short, and it mostly unfolded like a glorified wave shooter. I’d move from one area to the next, killing groups of enemies until they were all dead, then moving to the next area. The level had a lot of layers and verticality, which helped alleviate the sense of repetition. Overall though it did feel shallow.

Davis alluded to other game modes that will be included when the game releases, which should add more variety, but the early demo I tried failed to really grab my attention with regards to anything other than the polish and tenacity of its core gameplay mechanics. There were only two enemy types on display: infantry units that could flutter through the air as aliens with wings and tiny bugs that buzzed around in the air. I never really felt in danger.

The team working on GunHeart has an impressive collective resume and is clearly building towards a game that has the potential to be an amazing and collaborative cooperative multiplayer VR shooter. With experience building games like Gears of War and Robo Recall the tendency for polish is there so it just remains to be seen if the experience itself will hold up over the long haul.

There aren't many out there, but the free apps on PlayStation VR are nothing to scoff at.

Sony launched PlayStation VR with a bang, including a ton of amazing games from nearly every genre. If you haven't spent any time lurking through the PlayStation store since setting up your PlayStation VR, then you might not realize that there are a handful of free apps available for download right now. At the moment, the pickings are a bit slim, but that's to be expected since we're only a few short days past launch day. Well, don't worry about searching through the PlayStation store because we've got the details on the best free apps on PlayStation VR.

Invasion!

Invasion is a short film that centers around a pair of aliens who have set their sights on conquering Earth. There is just one problem. The first thing they run into is a mischievous white rabbit who isn't going to take their scare tactics sitting down. You'll find that you're a little white rabbit as well, if you take a look at your feet while watching the video.

This is only about a 5 minute long video, but it's adorable enough that you'll chuckle a little bit. If you want a mini-movie that will tickle your funny bone, this is a great one to check out.

Hulu

If you've never had the chance to just kick back and watch your favorite show from within VR, now is your chance. PlayStation VR gives you access to Hulu, where you can catch up on your favorite movies and television shows. While the app itself is free, you will need a monthly membership in order to watch your shows.

Hulu also has a small library of short VR videos that you can check out. Not all of them are of great quality, but there are some cool ones that you can check out. These include shorts from National Geographic, and Kevin Hart. While the VR videos are cool, it's far more fun to sit in your VR living room and catch up on the latest episodes of your favorite shows.

Allumette

You might not think of VR as an awesome place to experience an animated short film, but Allumette would prove you wrong. There isn't any actual dialogue in the film, instead you'll hear music that helps to convey the emotion of the story that is unfolding around you.

It's the heart rending tale of a girl, and her mother and the sacrifice one makes for the other. The animation is gorgeous in a style that may remind you of stop motion classics from the past. We won't give away the story itself, but it takes place in a town on clouds in the sky. At times the animation is so close that you can lean in, or move slightly to see around the corners of the town. It is a bit long though, so be prepared.

Littlstar VR

Littlstar is another video app that is filled to the brim with content. These videos are all in 360 degrees, and put you smack in the middle of the action whether that means seeing Rio for the Olympics, or being interrogated in a Funny or Die sketch. They've got a pretty awesome navigation system as well.

You can navigate your way through categories, featured videos, channels, and more to find the videos that you really want to see. You'll even seen television channels, like Discovery and Showtime that has produced VR content for you to enjoy.

YouTube

If the internet puts all of the information in the world at your fingertips, YouTube does the same with videos. From news, to vloggers, to beauty videos and gaming videos, and more, YouTube is full to the brim of content. So it makes sense that you'd be able to fall down a rabbit hole of videos even if you are in VR at the time.

There is a ton of content to explore, and more than any one person could ever sift through. Whether you just want to watch your favorite music videos, or you're catching up on the news of the day YouTube can get the job done.

Until Dawn: Rush of Blood

Until Dawn: Rush of Blood is a wickedly fun arcade style shooter that is guaranteed to make you jump at an inopportune time. While you'll have to pony up to pick up the first game, if you haven't tried out a horror game in VR then this is a great opportunity to do it since the demo of the game is available for free.

While playing Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, you'll sit in a roller coaster with monsters coming at you from all angles. You'll have to duck, while you are armed to the teeth to deal with them. With seven different levels and a variety of paths to take along the way, there is a ton of terror for you to shoot your way through.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Jackal Assault VR Experience

If you're a fan of the Call of Duty franchise, then you're in luck. That's because there is a VR add-on experience available even if you've already picked up Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. You'll be put into the cockpit of the Jackal, a fighter jet capable of battle in both Air and Space. Things start out simple enough, but soon enough you'll be thrown into combat after being attacked during a training mission.

Gary the Gull

As the weather gets colder, some of us are already dreaming of a nice warm day at the beach. If that's the case, then you may want to take a vacation and hang out with Gary the Gull in VR. This is a short film with a small twist, you aren't just watching what's going on, you're interacting with it.

As you play, the story will change depending on how you respond to Gary's questions. This experience will pick up voice responses, as well as head gestures. If you decide to use PlayStation Move controllers, you can also interact with the environment. This includes drawing in the sand with a stick, as well as picking up objects around you.
