Unity 5.6 launches with support for Vulkan graphics, Nintendo Switch, and more

http://ift.tt/2nFTcZX

One of gaming’s most popular development tools is getting a ton of improvements as the company responsible prepares for the future.

Unity 5.6 is now live, and developers can expect a lot of changes from this latest update. Unity Technologies has also reconfirmed that this is the end of the Unity 5 “cycle.” Moving ahead, the company is switching to a different version-numbering system that will instead incorporate the year. Unity 2017 updates will begin rolling out soon.

As for the 5.6 update, developers can expect the Unity tools to provide a much better experience for adding lighting and particle effects into games. Unity is also getting an overall performance update as well as support for the Vulkan graphics API, which is the power-efficient followup to OpenGL.

“Vulkan support brings increased speed while reducing driver overhead and CPU workload,” reads the Unity blog. “This leaves the CPU free to do additional computation or rendering and saves on battery life for mobile platforms.”

The update also introduces a 4K video player with the capability of running 360-degree videos for virtual reality. Unity is also bringing in native support for new platforms. Developers can export their games for Facebook’s Gameroom service, Google’s Daydream VR headsets, and — most notably — Nintendo Switch.

Studios have already released Unity games for the Switch. Those include Super Bomberman and Snipperclips, which both used Unity 5.5. Now, with native support, developers will have an easier time building and optimizing their play experiences for the hybrid home/handheld Nintendo Switch device.

Unity has pumped a ton of other upgrades into 5.6 including stabilized multiplayer, better iOS crash reporting, new features for physics in 2D games, and more. You can read a full, detailed changelog on the official site.

Looking ahead, the company also explained why it is changing to Unity 2017.

“After Unity 5.6, we will introduce a new version numbering system starting with the 2017.x cycle for all releases in 2017,” reads a company blog post. “We’ve made this change to clearly mark the end of the Unity 5 cycle, and align with our release cadence.  With Unity 2017 we will continue shipping new versions regularly, to ensure a steady stream of new tech and improvements. We think a date-based version numbering system better reflects this approach to ship and iterate faster.”

This post is part of the PC Gaming channel, presented by the Intel® Game Dev program.

New HTC Vive Releases For The Week Of 03/26/17

http://ift.tt/2nFY0OK

New HTC Vive Releases For The Week Of 03/26/17

It’s a new week and you have quite an impressive collection of new Vive games to choose from including gorgeous narrative experiences and intense shooters. First up we have Serious Sam VR: The First Encounter, a VR port of the HD remaster of the original game. With the single player campaign and both competitive and cooperative multiplayer in tow, there’s a lot of meat on the bones of this one. Check out our previous report breaking down the game. Another highlight this week involves the classic conflict between Moriarty and Sherlock Holmes. Moriarty: Endgame VR takes the battle of the minds to a post-apocalyptic world and allows you to watch the story unfold in a living virtual comic book. Of the narrative slant, we also have Project LUX. While it has some of the most impressive animations and art you’ll see in the VR ecosystem, it may be hard to justify the higher price point.

In the meantime, if you missed last week, you can see those new releases here. And don’t forget that UploadVR has a Steam community group, complete with a curated list of recommendations so that you don’t have to waste any money finding out what’s good in the world of VR.

We also have a top list of the absolute best HTC Vive games — which is updated every few months with the latest and greatest options.

New HTC Vive Releases on Steam

Mouse Playhouse, from Tinkertainment

Price: Free To Play

In Mouse Playhouse you must manipulate objects and solve spatial puzzles as you guide your mouse comrade to the cheese. Throw objects, play basketball, and throw darts as you avoid the Meowbots and grab the cheese.

Recommendation: Free and fun. Give this one a shot.

EXA: The Infinite Instrument, from Aesthetic Interactive, Zach Kinstner

Price: $14.99

EXA welcomes you to a new dimension of music creation with a versatile virtual instrument. The tool can take any form and produce any sound which you can playback in loops.

Recommendation: If you’re interested in making music, this is a must have program.

Bitcoin VR, from Indiesquare, Mandelduck

Price: Free To Play

This application gives you a virtual space in which you can view bitcoin transactions in real time as they fall from the sky and shoot them with a bow and arrow.

Recommendation: Very niche experience. You’ll definitely know if you want it or not.

Moriarty: Endgame VR, from Transmedia Entertainment

Price: $7.99 (Currently Discounted)

Moriarty: End Game is a living virtual comic book where players are allowed to enter and experience the panels/scenes of the stories. The story takes you into a post-apocalyptic world where Moriarty takes on Sherlock Holmes in their final conflict.

Recommendation: Very intriguing style of storytelling. If you’re looking for a newer way to experience a narrative, grab it.

Downward Spiral: Prologue, from 3rd Eye Studios Oy LTD

Price: $8.99 (Currently Discounted)

Influenced by 70s sci-fi, Downward Spiral drops you into a zero-G journey. You can either work through the story solo or with a friend or engage in a deathmatch mode for up to 8 players. The game includes modes with or without room-scale and locomotion that promotes comfort.

Recommendation: Very short experience that includes PvP to add a bit more value. You may disappointed with the length, but this could be an investment in a really interesting series. Check out our impressions here.

Enigma Sphere: Enhanced Edition, from Yomuneco Inc.

Price: $14.39 (Currently Discounted)

This enhanced edition of Enigma Sphere includes new game modes and experiences as you become a superagent in this interesting world. You’ll solve puzzles, find hidden spheres, and destroy android life forms in the story mode. Then, you can play challenge, sphere attack, and other modes for a more casual experience.

Recommendation: There’s a lot of fun and value to be found in this dense package. Grab it.

Project LUX, from Spicy Tails

Price: $22.49 (Currently Discounted)

In Project LUX there is mystery afoot. The crime is murder and you’ll watch the narrative unfold as characters seek out the killer of Lux. This animated story takes place across five episodes where you relive the memories of Lux as they’re pulled from her cyberbrain.

Recommendation: This is an absolutely gorgeous story-driven program, but it’s hard to warrant the price for a largely hands-off experience.

Alchemist Defender VR, from TreeView Studios

Price: $13.49 (Currently Discounted)

Alchemist Defender is a tower defense title where you fend off humanoid rat assailants with ranged attacks and a hammer for melee. There are different turret types you can deploy and relocate as you figure out the best strategy for your defense.

Recommendation: Pretty good looking new tower defender, but won’t immediately displace other similar games you may already have. Choose wisely.

Serious Sam VR: The First Encounter, from Croteam VR

Price: $39.99

The First Encounter is a full VR port of the 2009 HD remaster of the original Serious Sam game and comes with not only teleportation style movement but full locomotion for those that can handle it. Here you get the full single-player campaign, cooperative multiplayer, and competitive multiplayer in Serious Engine 2017. It was in Early Access before, but now this is the full release.

Recommendation: Absolutely must have for FPS fans. If you can handle full locomotion in VR, there’s even more value to be found. Here are our thoughts.

#Archery, from VRUnicorns

Price: $8.49 (Currently Discounted)

This game takes the art of archery and applies it to an entire swath of jobs, resulting in a wacky casual experience. With your bow and arrow, you’ll be taking on mini-games that end with you baking pizzas, eating hot dogs, whacking moles, and more.

Recommendation: Grab this one. It’s a lot of fun.

Planet Defender, from Fevolution Innovation Inc.

Price: $6.99

Planet Defender is a wave shooter where you have 150 seconds to take down as many creatures as possible in pursuit of a high score.

Recommendation: There are similar experiences with more to them at a similar price elsewhere. Pass on this.

Virtual Sports, from Free Range Games

Price: $16.99 (Currently Discounted)

From Vive Studios, Virtual Sports is aiming to be a definitive tennis and ping pong experience for the virtual platform. With realistic physics, you’ll be hitting balls across the net in 8 different environments against bots or other players.

Recommendation: Tennis is solid as is Ping Pong, but the latter could use a few more options for controls. Keep an eye on it but hold off.

Happy Penguin VR, from Bellcat VR

Price: $3.59 (Currently Discounted)

Happy Penguin is a VR spin on the Angry Birds play style with you whacking the flightless birds across a landscape to collect tokens. There are different types of penguins, different tools to hit them with, and different props to equip.

Recommendation: Not a bad casual grab.

Dick Wilde, from Bolverk Games

Price: $16.99 (Currently Discounted)

In Dicke Wilde you play the role of the titular character equipped with outrageous weapons and his outrageous beard as you take on a plethora of swamp creatures. You’ll use an electric bow, nail gun, grenade launcher, sawblade rifle, and more as you chase high scores in this humorous wave shooter in the backwoods.

Recommendation: A humorous, stylish spin on a genre where there’s no shortage of games. If you want a fresh new wave shooter, this one is a must.

Moonatees, from Fungi In The Basement

Price: $4.99

Moonatees is “the most realistic VR space manatee simulator” via the developers. In this game, you’re be handling everyday mundane tasks that deal with physics and geometry all while taking on an incoming asteroid.

Recommendation: Worth the purchase, but the team will also be making the game free in the near future. Your call. Whether you wait or not, add it to your library.

INFINITI VR, from The Pulse

Price: Free

INFINITI VR is a visually appealing experience that takes you to New Zealand through various scenes. The scenes include a few interactive elements you can start including skipping stones on water or playing with a mountain goat.

Recommendation: For a car ad, there’s not much interaction with the car itself. Nevertheless, it’s free and includes some pretty impressive visuals.

Gem Hunter, from FoxLeap

Price: $7.99

Gem Hunter is an action platformer where you fly a hovercraft as you collect diamonds for the Fox King. You’ll also mine gems, fight off creatures, and customize your ship while working toward the highest score.

Recommendation: Very fun experience. The early access portion is only 4 stages, but the full game will have 12. Best to grab it now because the price will go up.

GUNNVR, from Artificient Games Inc.

Price:$2.99

From the gunner’s chair of a new turret on an Earth Defense Force ship, you’re tasked with defending the planet. There’s a mysterious field of asteroids that has appeared so you must shoot them down and solve the mystery of their appearance.

Recommendation: Keep an eye on it throughout Early Access, but it doesn’t seem to be very interesting thus far.

Twisted Arrow, from Phaser Lock Interactive

Price: $14.99 (Currently Discounted)

Twisted Arrow is an adrenaline packed archery shooter where you must fight through a city overrun with monsters of different types. From military enemies to monstrous ones, you’ll use a collection of different arrows and your shield to survive.

Recommendation: Nock and load. This one is a blast. Read our full impressions here.

Ze VR, from Funny Bit Games

Price: $3.99

Ze VR takes the classic breakout style of gameplay and applies to it a virtual space. Shoot your balls and then deflect them with a shield or pulse to continue taking your targets out.

Recommendation: Pass on this one.

Cerevrum, from Cerevrum Inc.

Price: $6.99

Cerevrum is wave shooter that takes place in the world of Enuma. That sounds like your typical fair, but the developers have put together a game that intends to educate you by forcing you to harness your memory, attentiveness, or spatial intelligence to win.

Recommendation: Hard to recommend this one for Vive, but wait for a price drop if you like educational puzzle games.

Narcosis, from Honor Code, Inc.

Price: $19.99

Stranded on the Pacific Ocean’s seafloor, Narcosis introduces you to horrors at the deepest depths. This survival horror makes you manage your stress so you don’t burn through your oxygen while fighting off hostile fauna and flora.

Recommendation: Only a few hours to complete, but it offers up solid scares and a good story. Here’s our full review.

COG (Center of Gravity), from Zero Mass Energy, Inc

Price: $4.01 (Currently Discounted)

Paying homage to the classic game Asteroids, COG challenges you to shoot down space rocks as quickly and efficiently as you can with a ball you deflect around your space as you race to the high score.

Recommendation: There are similar experiences to find with a bit more to it. Pass.

Darwin’s bots: Episode 1, from Duplicator Studio

Price: $6.79 (Currently Discounted)

In the world of Darwin’s bots, robots are run of the mill. You’re a member of a newly formed special agency that’s put together after the first crime by a robot is committed. This shooter/adventure game’s first episode involves your training and first mission.

Recommendation: A slightly buggy start with a lot of potential. Grab this.

Uplands Motel: VR Thriller, from Gurashop

Price: $6.79 (Currently Discounted)

Uplands Motel is a thriller where you’re trapped at a motel after your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. Essentially you’ll be living out your own action thriller as you figure out the puzzles, survive, and fight your way out of this dire situation.

Recommendation: A neat concept with poor execution. Pass on this one.

Mekside VR, from Quantaze Interactive

Price: $14.99

This Minecraft influenced VR game takes a steampunk theme and drops you into a space you can shape. In Mekside, you’ll build with the cubic voxel but there are also pistons and motors you can use to interconnect different structures you put together. Aerodynamics and hydrodynamics are included as well so you can take to the skies and seas.

Recommendation: This has the potential to be the Minecraft style builder some have waited for. The style of play could definitely benefit from the freedom of VR. Check it.

New HTC Vive Releases on Viveport

Chinese Cook VR, from Guangdong South Sea Eagle

Price: $4.90

Chinese Cook employs you to create different cuisine in antique traditional Chinese inns. This game serves as an educational peek into Chinese culture and food via food.

Recommendation: This is a neat addition to your collection and does include an English language option.

MakeVR, from Sixense Entertainment, Inc.

Price: $19.99

MakeVR is another creative platform where users can bring their ideas to life. Experienced or not, this program makes it easier to get started quickly and do real-time scaling of your creations.

Recommendation: If you’re already comfortable with a creation platform, be wary. There’s still no telling when the developer’s own position tracked controllers will be available for this program.

New Oculus Rift and Gear VR Releases For Week Of 03/26/17

Last week Oculus Rift users got Rock Band, this week things are a bit more reserved. There is some good stuff to check out for a variety of genres though, so there’s something for pretty much everybody. Horror fans have the creepy deep sea thriller of Narcosis to look forward to, while whimsical sandbox fans can give Giant Cop a look. Amidst a handful of Gear VR titles and plenty of new Steam releases, it’s a solid week of new content.

If you missed last week, you can see those new releases here. And don’t forget that UploadVR has a Steam community group complete with a curated list of recommendations so that you don’t have to waste any money finding out what’s good in the world of VR.

Plus — check out our list of the best Oculus Rift games and best Gear VR games for more suggestions!

New Rift and Gear VR Releases on Oculus Home

Giant Cop: Justice Above All, from Other Ocean

Price: $24.99 (Rift)

Grab your coffee and donuts because you’ve got criminals to apprehend. But first, pick up that tiny little pedestrian and fling them into the ocean, before you pick up that car and throw it into the next intersection. At the core of it all you’re just a cop that’s supersized, but in reality you’ll spend more time goofing off than playing the otherwise rather boring game.

Recommendation: Wait for a price drop or discount. It’s not bad, but it lacks compelling reasons to keep playing after 5-10 minutes of being silly. Full review here.

Mirror, from 21CN Corporation

Price: $4.99 (Gear VR)

In a shocking twist for the VR market, Mirror is a horror-themed puzzle escape the room game. And by shocking twist I mean one of the most overdone genres in the entire industry so far.

Recommendation: Pass on this one.

Stunt Kite Masters, from Handy Games

Price: $4.99 (Rift and Gear VR)

Depending on how sensitive you are to VR sickness, you may want to stay far, far away from Stunt Kite Masters. It’s exactly what it sounds like in that you’ll embark on excursions while riding a kite across scenic beaches. It’s incredibly fast and silly, albeit a bit unpolished.

Recommendation: Pass for now while it’s a Gallery app, even if it’s a Rift port on Gear VR. Worth a look if it’s ever super cheap.

Dick Wilde, from PlayStack

Price: $16.99 (Rift)

For the most part Dick Wilde is just another wave shooter, but this time there are really bright and evocative colors to keep your eyes busy with unique weapons and intense action. It’s far from being taken seriously and is mostly just a silly way to shoot some bad guys and relive some stress.

Recommendation: If you like wave shooters, this is one of the most fresh takes in a while.

Narcosis, from Honor Code

Price: $19.99 (Rift)

Narcosis is a game about exploring the deep, dark depths of the ocean in a specialized diving suit. You’ll spend most of your time refilling oxygen tanks and piecing together a horrifying story amidst the loneliness of being trapped underwater.

Recommendation: It’s a bit short and rough around some edges, but it’s far from bad. Here’s our full review.

Ghost in the Shell, from Here Be Dragons

Price: Free (Rift and Gear VR)

Take an intimate look at the mind of Major Motoko Kusanagi as you explore her memories. The feature film, releasing this weekend, is about a cyber-enhanced soldier that sets out to hunt down criminals in a near-future setting.

Recommendation: It’s free and it’s quite impressive visually. Check it out.

Hidden Fortune, from Archiact

Price: $3.99 (Gear VR)

Hidden object puzzles are classics on the PC and they fit into the VR scene quite nicely. It mixes elements of object searching with adventure game design to create a unique spin on both genres.

Recommendation: Super simple but incredibly polished. Worth a look for fans of these types of games.

New Oculus Rift Releases on Steam

EXA: The Infinite Instrument, from Aesthetic Interactive, Zach Kinstner

Price: $14.99

EXA welcomes you to a new dimension of music creation with a versatile virtual instrument. The tool can take any form and produce any sound which you can playback in loops.

Recommendation: If you’re interested in making music, this is a must have program.

Recommendation: Very short experience that includes PvP to add a bit more value. You may disappointed with the length, but this could be an investment in a really interesting series. Check out our impressions here.

You’ll solve puzzles, find hidden spheres, and destroy android life forms in the story mode. Then, you can play challenge, sphere attack, and other modes for a more casual experience.

Recommendation: There’s a lot of fun and value to be found in this dense package. Grab it.

All of Google’s jokes for April Fools’ Day 2017

http://ift.tt/2nJjXhN

April Fools’ Day is upon us, and like every year, Google is doing its best to outdo itself. The restructuring that put Google under the new Alphabet parent company didn’t have an impact on last year’s gags, so we’re expecting the usual: Jokes ranging from ridiculously lame to very clever, spanning the simple blog post or video to the elaborate gag or new feature.

Google’s various divisions always create more practical and impractical jokes than any other tech firm, and it’s simply hard to keep track of them all. As a result, we have put together our usual annual roundup.

Ms. Pac Maps

Pac-Man in Google Maps was so popular in 2015, a Google spokesperson told us, that this year the company is introducing Ms. Pac-Maps. The game is available on Google Maps for Android and iOS, and should also be rolling out on the desktop. Compared to the previous version, the scoring system has been updated, you can now save your score by signing in, the game is much more easy to find on Android and iOS (right above the compass), and the fruit are different from the Pac-Maps variation. The game will be live until April 4.

Waze expands to Mars

Waze has been “approached by a leading extraterrestrial exploratory organization to build a more thorough and informative map of the fourth rock from the sun.” The Google-owned company is leaning on its leading map editors from the U.S., Russia, and Italy to help map out Mars. And don’t worry, your service won’t be affected since Waze has fired up a “special space-focused server” on its web-based Waze Map Editor platform for this small group. “So far, landing sites are simply marked as Places, dust storms/volcano activity are Major Traffic Events, and broken-down Rovers as potential road hazards.”

Google Cloud Platform also expands to Mars

It’s like this company hasn’t heard of any other planets. Google Cloud Platform is adding a new region: “we’re looking to the future cloud infrastructure needed for the exploration and ultimate colonization of the Red Planet.” The company’s first interplanetary data center, nicknamed “Ziggy Stardust,” will open in 2018. It will power “a dedicated extraterrestrial cloud region” that will serve as “an important node in an extensive network throughout the solar system.” The whole thing started as a 20 percent project with the “Google Planets team,” which found a suitable location in Gale Crater, near the landing site of NASA’s Curiosity rover. Best of all, Google Cloud Storage (GCS) is launching a new Earth-Mars Multi-Regional location so users can store planet-redundant data across Earth and Mars.

Google Wind

Google Netherlands has huge ambitions. Because it rains so much in the country (about 145 days a year), the Cloud Platform team has decided controlling the weather is a great idea. By leveraging machine learning and weather patterns, Google Wind controls the network of windmills across the country to disperse clouds when it’s about to rain. They can already provide sun and clear skies for everyone in the Netherlands, and maybe the rest of the world one day.

Google Gnome

If Google Home is for the home, then Google Gnome is for the backyard. The voice-activated, hands-free tool is really just a rip-off Google Home that can tell you what animal is in your bushes, use proprietary high-intensity lasers to trim your hedges, inform you which way the wind is blowing, and really tell you anything else you want to know about the outdoors. Oh, but don’t ask it indoor questions. Google Gnome doesn’t like that.

Haptic Helpers

Virtual Reality is too dependent on visual and audio experiences. Google’s Haptic Helpers take VR to the next level by simulating more than 10,000 unique experiences: “Smell the roses. Listen to the ocean. Feel a fluffy dog!”

New PSVR Releases For The Week Of 03/26/17

Rejoice PlayStation VR (PSVR) fans; now is your time. After a painfully slow start to 2017, Sony’s headset is finally about to kick it up a gear with a slew of great new releases. Two of those arrive this week with the long awaited port of a really good Rift and Vive game as well as a new tower defense title that’s exclusive to the platform. Enjoy!

If you missed last week, you can see those new releases here. Also, UploadVR has launched the ‘UploadVR PS VR Community’ on PlayStation 4! Join up, find other gamers to play with, and engage in discussions with them.

Also, don’t forget to check out our list of the 9 Best PlayStation VR Games if you need any extra inspiration.

Fated: The Silent Oath, from Frima Studios
Price: $9.99

The Oculus Rift and HTC Vive launch game finally comes to PSVR, and it’s well worth the wait. Fated is the first part of a first-person adventure series in which players are cast as a father and husband that must protect his family against mythical monsters and more. It’s a surprisingly effective journey that you won’t soon forget and we can’t wait to see where the developer takes it next.

Recommendation: Definitely pick this up if you haven’t already seen it on Rift or Vive. Read our review here.

Korix, from Stellar VR
Price: $19.99

Korix offers a pretty promising mix of single player and multiplayer tower defense and real time strategy gameplay. Your home world is destroyed and you have to fight off attackers in stylish action inspired by games of the late 90’s. If that sounds up your street then this is probably an ideal pick for you.

Recommendation: Definitely one to check out for RTS and tower defense fans.

Robo Recall Officially Gets 360 Tracking Support in Latest Update

‘Ghost In The Shell’ VR Now Available on Rift & Gear VR

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Step into the ass-kicking shoes of futuristic counter-terrorist ‘The Major’ in this engaging VR experience.

Today is the release of the highly-anticipated, as well as unnecessarily controversial, Ghost In The Shell feature film. The live-action adaptation of the popular cyberpunk Japanese manga turned anime film/TV series has been teasing some spectacular visuals as well as beautifully-choreographed fight scenes. Having been a fan of the series for years, I was admittedly hesitant when I first heard about the project. Afterall, history hasn’t exactly been kind to live-action anime adaptations. *cough* Dragonball: Evolution *cough*. However it makes me unbelievably hear that early reviews are reporting the film as visually-spectacular, incredibly well-acted and surprisingly loyal to its source material. So you can imagine my excitement when I woke up to even more Ghost In The Shell content, specifically a brand new Ghost In The Shell VR experience for the Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR.

Just one of the many collaborations Paramount is making with various companies to promote the new film, the legendary film studio has partnered with Oculus to create an immersive Ghost In The Shell VR experience. Developed by VR filmmaking veterans, Here Be Dragons, Ghost In The Shell VR has users step into the role of the stories bad-ass female protagonist “The Major” as they experience some of the coolest moments from the film such as her intense battle with some seriously creepy Geisha robots as well as her massive dive from a rooftop as featured in some of the promotional content.

It’s an interesting take on VR with a level of quality that changes depending on how you view it. Versions on the Gear VR and 369 video are neat at best. Full-body tracking on the Oculus Rift results in a more immersive experience obviously, but the mobile options are still a fun a little ride. It’s just nice to have a little extra Ghost In The Shell content to enjoy.

To hop into the high-tech world and experience the action yourself head here to download on the Oculus Rift and here to download for Samsung Gear VR.

No Rift or Gear VR? No problem! You can check out a slightly less-immersive 360-degree version in the video above!

Ghost In The Shell stars Scarlett Johansson and is in theatres now.

Palmer Luckey’s Departure From Oculus Highlights Raised Stakes For VR

http://ift.tt/2oHIaT5

Palmer Luckey’s Departure From Oculus Highlights Raised Stakes For VR

The above tweet comes from May 17, 2012, almost five years ago now, with John Carmack showing off the early prototype of the Rift he received from Palmer Luckey. This tweet helps mark the beginning of a journey that drove interest in VR to include millions of people.

A lot can change in five years. Now, the stakes are raised with billions of potential customers being pursued by the world’s biggest technology companies.

We were surprised when we heard in December Oculus co-founder and former CEO Brendan Iribe moved into a role at Facebook focused on leading a PC VR research team. A month later, we learned why it happened.

Turns out Google veteran and former Android leader Hugo Barra was Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s choice to lead the company’s VR efforts. Now under Barra, the company seems to be embarking on a larger reorganization effort inside Facebook to streamline the company’s push into mixed reality. Here’s Oculus chief technology officer John Carmack replying to TechCrunch writer Lucas Matney saying the reorganization has helped clarify “a lot of things”:

Today is of course Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey’s last day at Facebook. The company indicated to us in December he was still an employee and we’d get updates on his role soon. Aside from a $500 million decision from a Texas jury, however, the biggest change for Oculus since December is the addition of Barra to the team. So it seems possible Luckey’s departure might be a byproduct of Barra working to clarify the positions and goals of key leadership and teams within the company. Facebook declined to comment about the reason for Luckey’s departure, and Luckey hasn’t responded to a request for comment via his Facebook account, but is it possible Luckey just didn’t fit into the new plan?

Facebook continues to hire for dozens more positions in a huge build up against Google, Amazon, Microsoft and whatever secret projects Apple is cooking up. Microsoft, for instance, just hired Liz Hamren from Oculus to lead the company’s marketing efforts as mixed reality becomes a high priority for the tech giant this year. On the technical side, Microsoft hired pioneering researcher Mark Bolas last year. In October, Facebook hired Rachel Rubin Franklin to head up the company’s social VR efforts, drawing on her experience with The Sims to put us in shared virtual worlds.

UploadVR recently spoke with Max Cohen, the head of mobile product at Oculus, who explained the need for the reorganization:

We’ve always thought of Oculus as spanning both mobile and PC. In reality, that’s tough. It’s tough on engineering. It’s tough on roadmaps. It’s tough on just making sure that you are able to move quickly for platforms that are pretty different. The Rift is a gaming platform first, and so it has some needs that aren’t always the same as Gear, which is a platform that really shines with some of the movies and videos and some light gaming as well.

While the company still works to make technologies cross-platform, “you now have people that identify more closely with one particular organization,” Cohen said. Engineers aren’t in silos, as Cohen put it, but the reorganization is meant to help with focus and the “functional speed of execution.”

While Palmer Luckey undeniably kickstarted interest in VR with the Rift crowdfunding project, it is not clear that he could help the company quickly execute on its ideas and bring a standalone headset to market one day that marries the best of mobile headsets to the best of PC ones.

Carmack has been focused on mobile since he joined the company, and his focused work helped get Gear VR to market in late 2014. Luckey’s Rift, the thing which got people interested in VR, is just now hitting its stride in 2017 (despite research and funding starting in 2012) with tracking bugs fixed, quality content rolling out frequently and impressive hand controllers.

Even so, Gear VR is owned by more than 5 million people, while the Rift’s numbers are kept secret probably because they aren’t anything to be impressed by yet. The larger takeaway being that Carmack is still at Oculus in the same role he’s always been in because he’s a highly proficient and experienced engineer with a track record of delivering lots of good ideas. Just today the roll-out of a software improvement is underway born from Carmack’s work which dramatically improves the perceived resolution inside the Gear VR — eliminating a major criticism of the technology when folks first notice the pixels and find text hard to read.

The stakes for mixed reality have been raised now that Apple, Microsoft, Sony, Google and Amazon are buying into VR and AR so heavily. That seems to mean Oculus needs more people like John Carmack, and fewer like Palmer Luckey.

‘Ghost in the Shell’ VR Experience is an Awe-Inspiring Deep Dive into the Mind of Major

http://ift.tt/2nT65lq

The live-action Ghost in the Shell (2017) film starring Scarlett Johansson is already in theaters worldwide, but Oculus has today published the VR experience so you can get a slice of the android-kicking action direct on your Gear VR or Oculus Rift.

Created by VR studio Here Be Dragons in partnership with Oculus Studios and Paramount Pictures, the Ghost in the Shell VR Experience takes you on an on-rails journey of the iconic opening scene of nearly every Ghost in the Shell series to date, the ‘building dive’ where Major, the film’s cybernetically enhanced protagonist, jumps off a skyscraper wearing a hip-hugging thermoptic camouflage suit.

Ghost In The Shell Oculus

The digital representation of Major, played by Johansson in the film, straddles the uncanny valley somewhat, but the 360 action more than makes up for it as Major shoots her way through killer android geishas and bad guys of all types. Near the end, diving ever deeper into her mind, there’s a moment when you come to to a jelly fish-filled pool that’s nothing short of awe-inspiring.

What’s more, Oculus Rift owners (and Vive owners using ReVive) get to enjoy a real-time rendered version of the experience, meaning you get an eye-full of some pretty crisp graphics with the immersive power of the headset’s positional tracking.

Ghost In The Shell Oculus(2)

The Gear VR version, while still inspiring, is a 3D 360 video—with all the caveats of the medium including lower fidelity and some weirdness around the top and bottom poles of the video capture. None the less, the Gear VR version is clear above average for 3D 360 videos.

If you don’t own a VR headset, you can also watch the 360 video on Facebook, although you’ll truly be missing out on one of the slickest film tie-ins in VR to date.

VR studio Here Be Dragons (ex-VRSE) is known for producing critically acclaimed VR experiences and 360 film from a number of collaborators such as The History of Cuban Dance, The Mr. Robot VR Experience, Catatonic, and The Evolution of Verse to name a few.

SVVR 2017: Watch Our 360 Video of a Full Body Artec 3D Scan

At the 2017 Silicon Valley Virtual Reality (SVVR) expo this week, we saw a lot of cool new tech. Some of it was VR, some if it was AR, and some of it was something else entirely. During the show, we livestreamed from the floor in 360-degrees using an Insta360 Air and one of the companies we had the chance to check out was Artec 3D. You can see the full livestream of our time at their booth, complete with a real-time 3D scan of our Video Producer, Az Balabanian. He stepped into the Artec Shapify Booth and within seconds his entire body was scanned.

Just make sure you set it to HD or else it might default to lower resolution and come across a bit blurry:

For more information about Artec 3D, make sure to check out the official Artec 3D website.

Top 7 Biggest VR Stories Of 2017…So Far

Top 7 Biggest VR Stories Of 2017…So Far

It’s hard to believe that we’re already a quarter of the way through 2017. It feels like just yesterday the Upload team was gathered in Las Vegas to kick the year off at CES. We thought that might be the biggest week VR would have yet seen, but it’s already been bested by a number of other events in the first three months of the year.

It’s been a wild ride, so we thought we’d recap some of the biggest stories of the year so far.

Palmer Luckey Departs Facebook

The news only hit yesterday, but already Palmer Luckey’s departure from Facebook and its VR team, Oculus, has become one of our biggest stories of the year. Luckey was of course the original creator of the Oculus Rift and one of the company’s founders, taking it from the early days of prototypes in his garage all the way up to the Zuckerberg-owned mammoth it is today. His departure was expected by some following last year’s revelation that he had helped fund a political smear campaign, but the news is no less significant. To many, Palmer Luckey is the reason there even is a VR industry. Now we don’t even know if he’s going to remain a part of it.

Man Loses 50 Pounds From Playing VR

VR can educate, entertain and empower, but what about helping you keep fit. You might not think it, but headsets like the HTC Vive are actually a perfect way to keep in shape, and Jon Stauffer proved it earlier this year. Playing beat-based boxing game, Sound Boxing, Stauffer was able to lose more than 50 pounds, dramatically changing his figure. Through play sessions of anywhere between 20 to 90 minutes Stauffer came up with a fun way to keep fit, and could serve as an inspiration to many.

How VR Porn Will Evolve in 2017

Surprising absolutely no one, porn is already proving to be big business for the VR industry and could well help drive adoption as we get deeper in 2017. We headed to the world’s largest adult entertainment expo in Las Vegas and found an industry that was embracing VR as well as some insights into how VR porn might improve as the technology progresses.

Fallout 4 VR Is Coming To E3

It says a lot about just how excited people are for Bethesda’s VR port of its his role-playing game, Fallout 4, that it’s one of our most popular stories of 2017 so far. Fallout 4 VR debuted at E3 last year and, even though we got hands-on with it then, we still have so many questions about what to expect from the full release going forward. It’s a huge relief to find out the game will be back at this year’s iteration of the show, then, with a demo that will apparently “blow our minds”. The wasteland is calling to us; June can’t come soon enough.

The Story of LIV

Cix Liv has a fascinating story to tell about his company, LIV, which you shouldn’t miss. We chatted to Liv about his work in mixed reality filming, which has already led to some amazing videos. It’s all made possible with the LIV Cube and accompanying software that makes for some of the most accurate and engaging MR content we’ve yet seen.

Our First Look At LG’s VR Headset

We knew there would be other VR headsets that supported Valve’s SteamVR platform, we just had no idea who would make them and when we’d see them. But we got our answer at GDC this month; LG is developing its own take on the VR headset, and it’s expecting to have it ready for consumers later this year. We got to go hands-on with it at the event, and it looks like we’ll have another excellent headset on the market soon. We’re particularly fond of the ability to slide the device’s front up above our eyes instead of having to uncomfortably rest it on ours heads. Just what else the company can pull out of the bag remains to be seen.

John Carmack Takes The Stand In ZeniMax Trial

There was a time when Oculus seemed like it could do no wrong in the VR industry, but those days seemed distant when a jury ruled that owner Facebook must pay $500 million to ZeniMax Media earlier this year. That result came at the end of a lengthy legal battle between the two, where ZeniMax claimed that its former employee, one John Carmack, had stolen technology from the company when he moved to Oculus in 2013. Carmack’s time in the spotlight was a particular highlight, at one point joking that he wasn’t a Mac user unless under duress.

Google Daydream does not work on the Galaxy S8

http://ift.tt/2nHVQ2M

One way or another, Daydream will work on the Galaxy S8.

If you try to install Google Daydream on the Galaxy S8, a phone that exceeds the requirements for Google's VR platform in every conceivable way, you'll be met with an error message stating a compatible version is missing and will not be able to install Daydream.

The bad news — a compatible version of Google Daydream doesn't exist for the Galaxy S8.

The good news — that isn't going to be true forever, no matter what Samsung and Google say.

With its impressive Infinity Display and the most capable processor you can get in an Android phone today, the Galaxy S8 is the most capable mobile VR system you can buy today. We know this, because it comes pre-loaded with a trigger to install the biggest mobile VR platform on the planet — the Oculus-powered Gear VR.

This could have been an easy win for an admittedly niche group of Android users.

It's not unusual for Samsung to prefer partner software to Google's offerings, and there's no arguing the Gear VR is the more feature complete when compared to Daydream right now, but what happened to choice here? Daydream currently offers access to Google Play content that isn't currently available on the Gear VR, not to mention a killer YouTube app. Plus, some people upgrading to the Galaxy S8 may already have a Daydream View headset. This could have been an easy win for an admittedly niche group of Android users.

Don't worry, you'll eventually be able to install Daydream on this phone. Like every other Android phone, the only thing stopping you from installing Daydream is a single line in one of the system permissions files. If you add that flag yourself, using the handy guide we've assembled for other phones, Daydream will start working immediately. Accessing that system permission file requires something called root access, which isn't available for the Galaxy S8 just yet. If history is any indicator, the wait for this root access won't be particularly long.

Google only allows partners to add this line of code to phones that meet the Daydream spec, which involves Samsung and Google reaching a distribution agreement that doesn't conflict with the current Oculus relationship. Until that happens, this is going to be the only way to enable Daydream on your phone.

Giant Cop: Justice Above All Review – Big Trouble In Micro City

http://ift.tt/2nSS4UX

Giant Cop: Justice Above All Review – Big Trouble In Micro City

When I first saw Giant Cop early last year, it was one of VR’s very best tech demos. How could it not be? Towering over a city block, picking up civilians and mercilessly dangling them like a key chain, or throwing them across the map was one of the most amusing and entertaining things I’d done in a headset. It was the perfect instrument to show off the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive in five minute windows.

Giant Cop is not, however, one of VR’s very best full games. Developer Other Ocean has expanded on everything that made that short glimpse of this unusual kaiju game great: there are more environments to explore and more toys to pick up and play with. But when it comes to a structured campaign it struggles to find engaging uses for its unique premise beyond the mechanics we first saw a year ago.

Our hero protects Micro City, a wonderful train set world that runs like clockwork. Traffic races around your feet and ant-sized people stop to look up and wave at you. It’s like a high resolution version of Google Earth, only put through a 70’s filter to echo classic cop shows like Starsky and Hutch.

With the help of the Commissioner and your partner, Buddy Cop, you head to different sections of the city to hunt down criminals, scanning the streets for wrong do’ers, starting with a hunt for ‘Savage Cabbage’ dealers. No, that isn’t code for drugs, you’re literally chasing down vegetarians and putting them in their place. Giant Cop does have a pretty wonderful sense of humor to complement its silly premise; I laughed a lot while arresting people with silly hats or out on the hunt for ‘Pokedogs’ with their smartphones.

Now, I’ll be the first to admit that, as wonderful as an idea as Giant Cop is, turning it into an engaging, full-length campaign is a tough ask. But Other Ocean has taken the game in a strange direction, attempting satire on current events rather than fully embracing the game’s inherent silliness. Most of it’s missions involve tedious tasks that more often than not ask you to just look really, really hard for something, be it a criminal, protest poster, or specific vehicle. It’s like turning the hunt for the TV remote into a video game, and it’s about as thrilling as it sounds.

Making this more of a headache is the game’s teleportation system, which points you in specific directions and only allows limited traversal. Though it’s appearing on Rift and (later on) PSVR, the absolute best way to play Giant Cop is with roomscale support, as there are no options to let you move the camera artificially, and some items of interest will often be out of reach or in dead spots for tracking. The game does recommend you have a certain amount of space available to you, but that doesn’t excuse a lack of options for those without three sensor setups or more limited space.

Fortunately, there’s enough sandbox fun here to save Giant Cop from absolute mediocrity. In my first five minutes of playing I’d thrown a car on top of an innocent civilian, thrown an innocent civilian into the ocean to drown, used a giant tennis racket to bat an innocent civilian into the ocean to drown, crushed an innocent civilian with a giant maraca and, finally, laid an innocent civilian flat on a road to be run over by a truck. I made a Grand Theft Auto killing spree look like a children’s cartoon.

The trouble is that all of that madness was present in the game’s original tech demo, and it doesn’t feel like anything has been gained in turning it into a full product. Sure, there are side missions to complete and hidden badges to locate, but it feels gamified for the sake of it. The first five minutes you spend with the game are going to be the best, though, and after that you’ve pretty much seen it all.

Final Score: 6/10 – Decent

Giant Cop is still one of VR’s best tech demos. Left to your own devices, this is an enormously enjoyable toybox that succeeds perhaps more than any other VR game in doing one thing: making you smile. But Giant Cop is far from VR’s best game. It’s short campaign is filled with repetitive, tedious tasks that will tire and frustrate more than they ever do engage. There’s still an immense amount of fun to be had in Giant Cop, but it’s got very little to do with what’s been added in the past year.

Giant Cop is available now on Oculus Home for $24.99 and will be coming to HTC Vive and PlayStation VR at a later date. Read our Game Review Guidelines for more information on how we arrived at this score.
