Against Gravity’s popular social VR platform hops on the battle royale bandwagon with its latest free update.
With the immense popularity of recent titles such as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Fortnite, and H1Z1, there’s no denying the intense stranglehold the battle royale genre has on the modern gaming community. Everyone and their mother are currently looking to cash-in on the unexpected rise of this particularly savage-style of competitive multiplayer, so it was obviously only a matter of time until VR developers began sinking their teeth into the lucrative genre with releases such as STAND OUT : VR Battle Royale and the upcoming Overduty VR: Battle Royale.
Now it seems as though even well-established VR experiences have begun to develop a taste for mayhem as Rec Room confirms its own version of the battle royale genre is on its way to the social VR experience. Available early next month as a brand new mini game, Rec Royale delivers all the frustration and paranoia you’ve come to expect from a BR-style game, all packaged in an adorable little setting that will, at times, make you question your barbaric nature.
Up to 16 players will be able to parachute deep inside an overgrown national park, peppered with summer camps, mountains, forests, outposts, ravines, lakes, and other useful terrain to navigate and loot. Speaking of loot, developers Against Gravity built a brand new backpack system for storing and quick swapping weapons and power-ups to assist you in the easy access of your newfound treasures.
From there it’s up to you to hunt down your foes using an assortment of pump shotguns, sniper rifles, and other powerful weaponry – all of which, we assume, will be firing paintballs. The last one standing at the end takes home the grand prize and, more importantly, full bragging rights.
Like all of Rec Room’s various other mini games, Rec Royale will support cross-platform play and is 100% free, although those logging in with a PlayStation Plus account will receive an added bonus in the form of an exclusive paintball burst rifle skin. The new mode is set to launch Thursday, June 7th on compatible PC-based VR headsets and PSVR. However, Against Gravity is offering a public alpha test for those with registered Rec Room accounts from Friday, May 25 to Sunday, May 27.
For those looking for a less-stressful multiplayer VR experience, Rec Room offers a host of other, more casual mini games to enjoy such as 3D charades, disc golf, and paddle ball, with more being added on a fairly regular basis.
